can someone tell me how to get rid of the black area on top and bottom of a dvd rip?

its wider than most dvds i ripped, but i'm sure its 16:9. why does it matter if its 16:9 or not?

i just found out its not 16:9 for sure any one know how i can find out what it is?

After you rip the DVD to the hard drive, load the VOB files into DVD2AVI and select preview. It will tell you the framerate, NTSC/PAL, and Aspect Ratio of the video.
Of course, since you are just ripping the DVD for backup purposes,you should have the original DVD package and on the back of the package, it should tell you the aspect ratio.
