  1. When authoring a movie with maestro it has an option where you can choose from a bunch of different aspect ratios. I was just wondering how i would be able to tell whether i should pick letterboxed or pan and scan for wide screen movies. Is there a way to tell the difference when watching the movie.

  2. yogurt,

The aspect ratios that Maestro offers will be selected according to the aspect ratio of the encoded video.

If the video is 16:9 "Letter Boxed; Black Stripe at top and bottom of Movie" then 16:9 is selected. If the movie takes up the entire screen "4:3; no black bars" then 4:3 is selected. Pan and scan is not used very much anymore.

  3. Okay thats what i was thinking. Thats what i usually pick. However, my beverly hills cop 2 back up is in widescreen mode( it has the black bars on the top and the bottom) but the movie is still a little bit vertically stretched. Its almost unnoticable but you can definately tell if you look close. Could this have happened by chosing pan and scan instead of letterbox or maybe even vice versa.

  4. Sounds like thats what happened.

Some movies are encoded with the black bars and some are not. It is another issue you have to watch.

I would suggest you do some "data mining" with regards to aspect ratios. It is the key to creating a successful movie.

  5. Also could be that the movie is 2.35:1 instead of 1.85:1

Thats exactly what i was thinking. I was just reading up about anamorphic videos at thedigitalbits.com and i came across this. My problem looks exactly like the top right picture on this page http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/anamorphic235demo.html.
Does anybody know if there is anything that can be done about this when authoring in maestro.
