    I tried burning a .avi movie file into VCD format using Nero.
    I tried playing it back on my DVD player, and nothing.
    What should I be checking? What am I doing wrong?

    Read the tutorials on converting avi to vcd/svcd and then burn with nero

    Convert with TMPGEnc, as this is a much better encoder than nero. You can then author and burn your VCD from the mpeg file that TMPGEnc creates.
