I would like to get the best DVD-writer to put in an EXTERNAL drive case which has USB and Firewire inputs. I have two cases which supposedly take any ATAPI/IDE drive and make them useful for USB and Firewire.
The Sony 500A ATAPI drive looks good, has great reviews here, but Sony denies that any of their drives will work with Macintosh. There's a report that the Sony combo drive has worked with Macs.
Please advise what drive would be the best to put in such a case and use as an external USB and/or Firewire drive on BOTH Macs and a PC (Win XP Pro).
Thank you.

Well the best means different things to different people!!!
I just put a Cendyne AO5 in a firewire case and am using with my Mac. I wonder how many people know the Cendyne AO5 = Pioneer DVR105 equals Apple Super Drive!!!!!
So it is seen as works just like an expensive Apple Super Drive all the i apps work! Which they won't with some third party drive. It was $159.00 after rebates etc from Staples. Office Max had simular deals on it a few weeks ago. I am using with an older Mac which is SCSI only and the ACARD ATA/66 PCI card sees it and plays disks but refuses to burn disks. So that is why it is in a Firewire case where it works perfectly!
