somebody in the main DVD2ONE topic wrote that the reason it is so fast while retaining such high quality is because it reads the bit distribution formula from the VOBs so it doesn't need to do the whole long process that TMPGEnc does.

Is this true? I am really wondering how such a program works, because everytime I make a copy with it it is so gorgeous I can't believe it and I must know how and why this is possible. In my mind, speed is the enemy of quality when it come to encoding video.

  2. Hi,
Well i think the program is great but there must be a catch somewhere. I don't see how it can do it that fast and not miss important things out. The only thing i wish is that it would include menu's and extra's.

By FAR the most time consuming part of full the MPEG-2 encoding that TMPGEnc does is calculating the inter-frame motion vectors. If you're changing the bitrate, they do NOT need to be recalculated, so the whole process is a lot faster than full MPEG-2 encoding.

What CCE and TMPGenc do is build the original frame and then re-build it using the new bitrate parameters.
The transcoding is an act where you take off the bits you think are the least important. No need to make the frame and re-encode it.
New methods of transcoding will for sure improve the method to remove those bits, and provide a smother image.

From who really doesn't have transcoding experience,
