  1. I know this is probably a dumb question, but I have asked around and a few peole profess that they have DVD players that play Cd-r discs encoded with avi and mpeg files. Is there an inkling of truth to this? And what is the difference between Mpeg and Mpeg 1? Thanks for any comments.

  2. There are a few rare DVD players that will play MPEG files burned as data files and not authored to a VCD / SVCD / DVD.

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 use different encoding algorithms. MPEG-1 is used in VCDs and MPEG-2 in SVCDs and DVDs. For technical details see http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/frame/research/mpeg/mpeg_overview.html

  4. So if a cd-r contains an mpeg video file, does that make it a VCD (say using easy cd creator) or do you have to use some other program? Thanks.

if it falls under the specs then it is a vcd. but it has to be authored as a vcd. you can't just burn the mpg as a data file. some dvd players will play the file however but not all.

  6. a CD authored as a VCD has to be configured to strict specs as a Mode 2/XA disc unlike "normal" data discs which are burned as Mode 1. A special authoring program like VCDeasy/vcdimager and others knows the format and will take your MPEG and author a disc image appropriately.

  7. So, does that mean that I can create authored VCD's that will read on almost any dvd with easy cd creator, since that is one of the software tools on this site for making vcds?
