  1. When I am downloading a movie file I don't know
what file this is, for example:
a divx, avi or vcd file.

Is there a way to know what kinda file it is???

It's similar to receiving a parcel in the mail. You never know what it is, but you can make assumptions.

Most avi files of movies these days are DivX - otherwise you would have a file size of over 1GB if it were VCD format.

Dat files available are usually VCD's that people have uploaded, or are offering.

If an mpeg file is available you can more or less safely assume that it is mpeg1 format as mpeg2 would again be too large.

So, as I said in the beginning - treat it as parcel, be careful (bombs can be sent via parcel!!) but use a bit of common sense...

OK. So I know it's a dat file in VCD format (downloaded from newsgroup) but there is more than one dat file. Which do I run through VCDGearGUI? Any particular sequence? I am so close to figuring this out. Missing a piece of the puzzle here. Thanks.

How many dat files do you have? Perhaps its parts of the movie i.e. Part1, 2, 3 etc.? Convert them using VCDgear into mpeg and play them, or try to - that should give you some idea.

actually, the other dat files are small in comparison. my original theory was that they were probably trailers or like that. but i tried to convert each of them using both apps given on this site and nothing happened. i did get an mpeg file, but it was like 7k.
