OK, feeling pretty dumb, but I have read several guides and searched the forum and even tried to encode the movie twice.
I want to encode a 23.976 fps xvid to dvd. I use the xvid on svcd guide to reencode after stripping the audio to wav in VDub. Since the DVD template in TMPGEnc only lets you encode 29 fps I also tried to manually change the frame rate to 23.976. The audio is mp3.
Problems: The audio is out of sync (both trying the regular template with 29 fps and changing to 24) and the movie turns out about half the size I wanted it to (2G instead of 4).
It feels like I am using the totally wrong way of doing it, but I haven't found anything on the site about xvid on dvd.

I was having the same problem.. I went to the Tmpgenc website and got this excellent tip from the guys over there.
http://www.michael-moenning.de/start.html
Download the Tsunami Filter Pack. It makes the nimo pack look lame. I have found that most of the xvid movies I download are 23.976, and I have had no problem encoding them after I installed this. Even with the adjustment you have to make in VFAPI plug-in settings, I was not having any luck until I loaded this filter pack. When dealing with TMPGEnc. Go to their website and check out their BBS. It is really pretty sweet. you don't have to download the popup option. Just hit cancel and it will take you in . Good luck -
Thanks a lot!!
Just one thought - why isn't this tip available online in some of the guides? There is nothing (or at least I haven't found anything) in the guides about xvid on dvd or this problem. Or maybe the two of us are the only people having this problem...
And a question - you use the "easy" way of encoding xvid? Ie not frameserving.Sweet. -
www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencdvd
In the wizard choose film movie under content of video under step 2. (The source will be 23,976 with 3:2 pulldown).
You can also change it manually, select 23,976 fps and under encode mode change to 3:2 when playback.
This DVD MPEG should work to import in all dvd authoring tools and it should be synced.
I added a note about this in the tmpenc dvd guide.
(edited...thought you were making svcd first) -
There is no NTSCfilm template for DVD

As usual there was an answer to be found, I think I read the http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencdvd 25 times, but I must have been on something. Sorry and thanks.
EDIT: Did you just add the 23.976 info in the wizard or was I incredibly blind?
EDIT2: So the tip that was given above about the Tsunami Filter Pack should be disregarded I take it...Sweet. -
I added the 23,976 note today...I thought I had did it before but must have forgotten it. So it is my mistake...sorry...

Baldrick, when encoding from a 23.976 source I have found that if I select film movie, rather than video movie in the wizard I get what looks like slight interlacing artifacts. These are not there if I select video movie, but then I do get a slightly jerky playback on panned scenes. I am currently encoding a movie, where I have selected video movie in the wizard and I have selected 3:2 pulldown under the advanced settings to see if this helps. Or should I be selecting 3:2 pulldown on playback under the encode mode (does this do the same as selecting film mode in the wizard). Don't understand why I should be getting what looks like interlacing artifacts though. They are not major, just a minor annoyance.

Ok, the dumbness is slowly getting to me again.
Did a complete encoding and the movie is still really out of sync. It gets gradually worse. And the other problem is that the file turns out to be about half the size I wanted it to be. I just saw a third thing - the mpg file says the movie is 3 hrs long... the source is 1.50.
One question - the changes that need to be done in the VFAPI plug-in when converting to vcd/svcd - they still need to be done I take it?! There is no difference between that kind of mpeg and this kind?!Sweet. -
Does the audio have a variable bitrate, from your posts I would say almost certainly yes. Open the avi file in vdub, you should get a vbr warning. And if you play it in vdub it will play with the sound out of sync. Follow this guide to correct the problem.
http://www.vcdhelp.com/divxtovcd.htm#audio -
Well, I did strip the audio in VDub already (I couldn't see anything different in that guide from what I have been doing stripping wav-audio for the around 100 SVCDs I encoded) and I didn't get a message saying it is VBR (The only difference from the guide is that I choose 48000 Hz, since it is supposed to be a dvd).
What does happen is that it gives me an error message at the very end while encoding it, saying Program failure and the crash reason is Access violation. I've checked the wav and it seems ok (it has the correct length and I can't distinguish any flaws). AFter that VDub hangs.
It really seems to me that the problem is within the video, but I have read all different TMPGEnc guides and I can't figure it out. I have encoded divx on dvd with no problem, but it is the xvid that's bugging.Sweet. -
Does the file play in sync in vdub ?
Have you checked the video stream for bad frames using vdub ?
When you saved the wav, did you use full processing mode, uncompressed PCM ? -
Ok, rederived the key frames (which is what I think you suggested) and when trying to save it VDub hung. And yes I stripped like u say, and yes it is alright in VDub.
I also tried to strip a different xvid, which made the program crash, and also a divx, which worked perfectly. So it seems like there is something with my VDub and xvid. Might it be my codecs or maybe the program? I watch xvid perfectly in WMP.
EDIT: I tried stripping it in avi2mpg and it seemed to work. I'll try to encode the movie in that. But, the wav is so much smaller coming from avi2dub - it must have much worse quality?!Sweet.
