    Does this issue only happens with some DVD players or is it possible that your combination of DVD Player and TV causes the problem.
    My DVD player (Philips DVD712) plays all SVCD's ntsc or pal. Nothing has been tweaked at the player. But the same SVCD's at my friends home come's out black and white on a Philips DVD 612.

    It's your friends TV. It can't handle PAL60, where an NTSC signal is outputted by your DVD player as a psuedo PAL signal at 60 fps. Not all TVs can cope with this and will show only a black and white image.
