  1. ummm this might be too simple to ask .... but here goes ...

    Suppose I have a divx or Xvid with ac3 (i.e. a number of channels sound track) ...

    i know how to extract the audio using vertial dub etc ... normally it needs to be steramed and captured as a ac3 (really wav) and then decoded to a WAV before using TMPGenc to form an MPEG for burning to VCD etc etc ..

    My question is : can the VCD format handle more then stereo sound (i.e. surround sound tracks) - or is this just reserved for the DVD format....

    VCD does not support ac3 audio.

    You can use besweet to convert the AC3 down to Dolby Surround (Prologic) stereo. It's not Dolby 5.1, but it's a step up from plain stereo and it'll work on VCDs.
