Not possible with free tools, as far as I know. And no, you won't improve the audio by re-encoding it.
There's been discussion on this subject from time to time, AC3 versus DTS. It's interesting that so many people believe DTS is necessarily superior. I think it must be because only some of the earliest DVD players included DTS support, mostly upper-end players. Now DTS is widely supported, but the belief persists.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
You can, using eAC3to, but the resultant audio file will be larger and will not sound any better as the source is AC3 anyway. You might as well leave the audio in AC3.
Regarding the whole DTS vs AC3 debate; DTS is mastered at a louder volume and will only sound better in a professionally set up studio/theater. For your average home-theater, you will not be able to hear the difference.Friendly beatings available, inquire within. -
I've never heard of a free DTS encoder.
And AC3 is already compressed, usually at bit rates lower than DTS so re-encoding it to a higher bitrate into DTS will not make it better.
And as far as DTS being better, of course it is!
DTS is mastered at a higher bitrate!
DTS is also compressed, but not to the extent AC3 is.
AC3 audio is perfectly fine, i love it and DTS for movies.
When you have an uncompressed audio source and compress it into ac3 at 448kbps and into DTS at 1509kbps, which one will sound better ?
It's like when people say taking an uncompressed audio source from a cd and compressing it down to a 128/192kbps mp3 and say it sounds just as good....
LOL!!
Same goes for video, the lower the bitrate & the more you compress it, the lower the quality. -
According to blind tests by the European Broadcasting Union, test subjects gave DTS-1500 and DD-448 pretty much the same score, and that's in an acoustically matched studio.
Technically, DTS-1500 should sound better as it is mastered at a higher bit-rate, but if you convert it to DD-640, you cannot tell the difference and you save room for a higher bit-rate video in the same size file.Friendly beatings available, inquire within. -
u need surecode dts encoder which is not free.
as you asked "will i get a better output through DTS ?"
Real Answer is....
The GOD only knows, in terms of audio quality coz all humans are at war to define this is the best or the other one.
No one has real proof which is better. You can be the best judge by yourself, if you purchase SureCode Encoder.
But, definitely u will get huge audio file size. -
Considering that DTS rolls off the upper frequencies (the very definition of "lossy") and we have no way to know how efficient the algorithms are that is a debatable statement. We had a thread a few months ago where a guy posted and said that he had worked in the DVD production industry. He was sworn to secrecy but he hinted that DTS is not really as great as people think it is. DTS produces louder sounds and studies have shown that for the exact same sound, a louder sound is perceived by listeners to be of higher quality. For all we know AC3 may actually be more faithful to the original sound than DTS is, given DTS's trickery. By the way, the majority of DTS tracks on DVD are at 754 Kbps. Dolby claims AC3 is indistinguishable from the source at 640 Kbps and sources state that DTS has to go to 1509 Kbps to achieve the same fidelity.

in line with jman98...
if you really wanna go for high fidelity, and if your hardware system is capable of playing.
Try listening
Dolby Digital Plus E-AC3 @ 1534 kbps, 48000 Hz 7.1 Channel Surround Sound. (HD_DVD or BD) or
Dolby True HD , 24bit, 12 mbps, 192000 Hz, 8 channel (BD)
You will feel the REAL difference between AC-3,DTS and AAC .
