While encoding (with TMPGenc), is it ok to use the computer still? Will this cause any problems during the encoding process? I'm running an athlon 1400 w/ 896MB ram.

Never had a problem myself, multitasking while movie encoding. have always had good results and my PCs only 700Mhz, so I don't see u will have any probs
you know it's the anti-Midas touch when all you touch goes to shit.............. -
No problems here. I've even been running a capture to one file, while encoding another. Both files come out fine.

Encoding, as BJ_M says, is no problem but your encoding time may be longer as the encoding program gets robbed of cpu cycles.

Thanks guys. That's a big help. I'm re-encoding my first movie (signs) and wanted to make sure I wasnt gonna mess it up. By the way, one other question...
the preview window that shows during the encoding process shows the picture stretched, even though I set it to 16:9. Is that ok? Or is is encoding in the wrong format? I'm using TMPGenc.
Thanks again guys! -
If this movie is a divx, set the source aspect ratio as 1:1 vga, and the video arrange method as full screen (maintain aspect ratio)
-
Yes but what is the source a DVD or a divx avi file. The fact you are putting it on DVDr is irrelevant.
-
Sorry, the souce is dvd.
I also have a divx avi file I'm going to put on dvd too (episode of stargate). -
Im no expert but what you see in the preview window in TMPGEnc is what you will get in the end. If its streched its gonna come out stretched.
-
When DVD is the source If it is widescreen select 16:9 as the source aspect ratio, if it is full screen select 4:3 as the souce aspect ratio, Select full screen (maintain aspect ratio) as the video arrange method.
When divx is the source select 1:1 vga as the source aspect ratio. -
Craig when should someone select 1:1 as aspect ratio?
I always thought that when I want to convert videos downloaded from the web I had to use 1:1 as source ratio. -

And, just FYI, while encoding signs yesterday the preview window was stretched. I burned it and watched it last night and it was in widescreen, so it seemed to work fine.
I just wish I had a better TV so I could tell what was picture quality and what was my tv! :P -
Oh, and by the way, i'm encoding that episode of stargate right now. I extracted the .wav file so the audio would be in sync.
What should I have left the resolution as? The original divx file was 320x240, and I used the wizard to select low quality dvd. If I use the high quality option will it give me better resolution even though the source file was 320? -
Ok, my endoding project did not seem to work for the divx file. I tried to import it into maestro and it did not support it.
What's the best method to do this. I followed one of the guides, but maybe there is a specific program I need to use to create the dvd. -
Use one of the DVD templates in TMPGEnc to make sure your mpeg file is DVD compliant.
-
I used the DVD low quality template and it did not work. When I tried to import the file it gave me a 'media not supported' error. When I tried to play back the file it gave me no sound.
When I extracted the .wav file (with virtual dub) I had the setting at 44000, did that need to be 48000?
I'm re-encoding again right now with video only (m1v). When I re-extracted the wav file at 48000 I was finally able to import that into maestro. I thought I'd try a video only file next to see if that helps. -
Yes audio for DVD is 48khz, tmpgenc should convert it though when you encode to mpeg.
