  1. I tried to use subtitles ripped with Subrip as bmpīs and converted in Philips Svcd Designer format (*.sub), also with Subrip.
I multiplexed the subs in the mpeg stream using Winsubmux. Everything seemed to be ok, but after I burned the svcd it with Vcdeasy, I donīt have any subtitles.
    Anybody know why?
Or which is the right format?

If you were able to multiplex without getting an error then you probably did correctly save and edit the sub file.

    1. Did you verify that your player can play SVCD subtitles at all? As I recall, subtitles are an optional part of the spec, not all hardware players support them and no software players do. Check the compatibility list.

    2. Did you verify which type (CVD, SVCD, or both) it plays? Download the samples from the "what is svcd" page and test.

    3. Did you click "load all" in winsubmux and check the Preview tab to make sure the subtitles showed up in reasonable locations with readable colors? Converting back and forth between too many different formats in subrip sometimes causes it to lose track of subtitle positions, the easiest way to fix it is just to rip them again.

  3. thank you very much for your response!
I donīt find where to clic "load all" in winsubmux. I have the version 0.2.0.2. The preview didnīt function at all but I didnīt get errors while multiplexing and the resulted file was bigger with approximately 80 Mb.
The standalone player I use supports Svcd subs.

Can you also tell me, is the size 480*576 normal for pal svcdīs?
This is the size that Tmpgenc uses when encoding in mpeg2. I changed it in 720*576, but should I have let it as it was?

First, read the information about "SVCD" under the "What is" section at the left. Reading that will tell you that the correct resolution for PAL SVCD is 480x576.

I have no idea what kind of effect changing the resolution away from SVCD or CVD resolution might have on your player's ability to display subtitles, but I know that my player is picky even about maximum bitrates for SVCD subtitles.

The "load all" button in winsubmux is at the left underneath the sections for loading subtitles. Look harder. Preview won't work until you load the subtitles.

  5. thank you once again!
I will try to do the job from the beginning.
The button "load all" is there, of course

  6. Romulus-v have you found a solution to your problem? Because I have the same problem as you, that the subtitles don't appear, when I play it in my standalone dvdplayer.

I have burned the samples from this forum, and my dvdplayer supports CVD subtitles but NOT SVCD subtitles.

I also got no errors when I multiplexed, so I can't figure out, why it's not working.

If you have found out of something, then please reply or send me a msg.

    I think I solved it.....

Looking at the sample SVCD's from this site, I have discovered that 2 of the SVCD is made with CVD subs instead of SVCD subs

I made 20 SVCD's, trying to make it with SVCD titles, and then I read the sample description with a new pair of glasses

Some standalone players reads SVCD subs, some reads CVD titles and some reads both. And of course some reads NONE.

I tried multiplex my subs into my .mpg again, but this time I selected CVD instead of SVCD in WinSubMux, and burned my SVCD. And wupti.....it worked....

I have now made my project this way:

In WinSubMux I chose Stream #0 to be SVCD with xxxxx.sub, and Stream #1 to CVD with xxxxx.sub

This way my SVCD can show subs on all players that support either SVCD subs or CVD subs.

I even found out that my standalone is able to play CVD titles when i select sub 1 from sub selection. This is probably because my player chose NOT to see the SVCD sub as a sub at all, but sets the first valid substream to sub 1.

I hope this problem is the same for you guys, so you will be able to make it work now..

By the way....I used the same set of subtitle images for both stream 0 and 1. And of course also the same .sub file.

  10. I have also triede that many times, but it doesn't help. I can see the subtitles on the sample, when they are in CVD format. I can also see them from the rip of K-19: The widowmaker. So I don't know, what's wrong.

Have you tried encoding your video with a lower maximum bitrate? I have found that my player doesn't like SVCD/CVD subtitles when the video bitrate goes too high. I always encode with subtitles at 1800k max and they always work. I haven't bothered to try to narrow down the point where it starts having problems, though. I usually encode an hour or so per disc and 1800k is a good enough max for that.

Windows Media Player, WinDVD, and most other software players do not support selectable SVCD subtitles. Actually, I don't know of any software player on any OS that does support them. If you want to test the subs you'll need to burn a disc.

Bitrate Should not really have anything to do with, I make SVCD movies with MAX bitratio, and they all works now....just use the method i have described on my report for United 3052 Standalone DVD Player...

Most people I have send my newly learned info to, have succeded. Actually they have ALL succeded.

Non of us use DVD2SVCD because it doesn't work for us.

    We use this products.

VirtualDUB (for splitting the Video and Audio)
if my AVI have AC3 sound I use Headac3he to convert to MP2 sound
after splitting the audio from the AVI
    TMpgEnc (for Encoding to MPEG2)
    MaestroSBT (for creating the subs)
WinSubMux (for multiplexing the Videostream with the subs)
    VCDEasy (for authoring and burning)

But of course. I can't say that this will work for any of you guys, but try it anyway.

    Hope you will succeed

There is NO way around testing MPEG with selectable subtitles.

They have to be burned to CD and tried in a standalone Player that supports subs on SVCD. Non of the software players supports selectable subs. Sterno is absolutely right about that.

You have to eat it. BURN AND TEST.

  15. I have a standalone dvdplayer United 3052M. I don't rip my own movies and subs, instead I download the movie from the Internet and a subtitle script in *.sub or *.srt format. I then convert this subtitle script to a *.ssa subtitle script. Then I use this in MaestroSBT and make a script, which can be used in WinSubMux. After that I mux the subtitle and mpeg, with both svcd and cvd subitles.

I have also tried to use I-author and SubMuxGUI, when I mux. And I have used VCDEays to make a bin and cue.

But still I can't get subtitles on my movies.

I agree that it shouldn't. But I have found that for my player (GE1101P) it does. If I don't lower the max. bitrate subtitles either don't show at all or show with the wrong colors/transparency. If that happens and I try to play another disc with subtitles those won't work either, until I shut the player off and turn it back on. It took me a while to figure that one out.
