Newbie here so please be gentle
I have the ff setup:
• Sony DRX-500UL
• Dell desktop running DVD X Copy ver. 1.3
• Apple iBook with DVD-ROM and Panasonic DVD LV-75 portable DVD player (my target DVD players)
My goal is to be able to back up my DVD collection so I can play the backup on my target DVD players. I have been playing with DVD X Copy on my Dell desktop using Sony DVD+RM and Memorex DVD-R. Here are the results:
1. Backup to Sony DVD+RW media
DVD X Copy backed up my Monster, Inc. DVD with no error to a Sony DVD+RW blank media. I have however not been able to play the DVD+RW copy on either my iBook nor the Panasonic (neither recognizes the DVD+RW that I created). I understand from various compatibility lists that the iBook and Panasonic do not support DVD+RW or DVD-RW.
Question: Is it basically hopeless to be able to back up to a *rewritable* format (either +RW or -RW) to play on the iBook or the Panasonic? Anybody have had success making an iBook read a DVD+RW or DVD-RW?
2. Backup to Memorex DVD-R
Next I tried to backup to a Memorex DVD-R blank media. Midway through the burn process, DVD X Copy gives me an error message ("bad sector") and essentially I end up with very expensive coasters. I tried doing this twice with exactly the same result.
Question: Did I just have bad luck with the batch of DVD-Rs that I bought? Are there any other brands of DVD-R (or DVD+R) that other people have successfully used with the Sony DRX-500UL?
Thanks for your help!

Check the DVD writer forum. There are some threads there about media compatibility. See DRU500A media threads.
