    I may buy one today, but don't want to drive 25 minutes to find out that it doesn't play DVD-R.

    I checked the DVD player reviews here:
    Nobody mentioned DVD-R in their writeup; one person checked the checkbox for DVD-R, but that might have been a mistake, since nobody else did.

    The official JVC page says nothing about DVD-R.

    A few people who just bought it both confirmed it plays DVD-R.
