Slow burn speed for player compatibility or VCD quality?

I've been reading that VCDs should be burned at slow speeds (1-4X). Is this recommendation only to ensure that the videos can be played on most DVD players, or do these speeds also enhance the quality of the VCD?

Also, I just installed a 48x burner and my burning software doesn't allow me to set it at lower than 16x. Would it possible to re-install my old 16x burner in the unused bay (re-installing my previous burner software in a different folder, I guess) so that I could burn at slow and fast speeds?

Lastly, if I burned an initial VCD at 4x, would it then be o.k. to burn copies at 48x?

This can be a problem with cheap writers, or cheap DVD players. Why don't you burn at Max and see how it plays ???

I burn at 40X all the time with no problems.
