  1. This problem has me quite baffled. I'm making DVD --> SVCD, with TMPGEnc to create and VCDEasy to author. After burning to CD, most of the resultant discs seem to make a high-pitched whirring noise for the first few minutes of the movie in my standalone (Pioneer DV-333). Advancing 1-3 chapters usually stops it. Hitting mute on the TV doesn't make the sound go away, so it sounds like something physically wrong, but "bad discs" are always bad, while "good discs" are always good.

I've tried using different media (Sony 74min CD-R, Imation 80min CD-R, and Maxell 80min CD-R) with the same results. I've tried 2 different CD-RW drives with same results. I've tried both Nero and Fireburner to burn the .bin/.cue. The funny thing is that when I burn the MPEG2 directly using Nero (no authoring/chapters via VCDeasy), there is no whirring noise in the resultant SVCDs (2/2).

Has anyone else come across this before? TIA.

    Tikkanen,

I also have a DV-333 and have not experienced your problem. Where is the strange sound coming from? If you turn off the TV does it still exist? Need more info.

  4. Good question. The sound appears to come from the player, and persists after turning off the TV.

The other oddball thing is that DVDs play fine w/o any mechanical noise at all. Some of the SVCDs do as well, not restricted to a certain CD-R brand.

BJ_M: I sure hope the player isn't about to die. heh

    Tikkanen,

Are the problem SVCD's compliant, if not, what is the bitrate and resulion of the Mpegs? If not compliant SVCD then I will burn a cd with your mpeg specs to check it out.

  6. I have a 434 that makes a high pitched sound when playing certain discs as well. That is the LAST Pioneer home theatre peice of equipment I buy.
It also ceased to play audio CD's, (before I started beating it).

Yes they are good for taking out your agressions on.

When I opened the box and the thing weighs the same as a pack of cigarettes I should have taken it back and told them something was missing and bought an Apex.
