  1. Hi,
I'm trying to convert Xvid to SVCD and have now solved all audio synch problems and aspect ratio weirdness for 16:9 input.

My last remaining problem that I'm having is that whilst the Xvid input is good quality, the output I'm getting isn't. The resolution seems to have dropped to such a low level that you can see pixellation on all lines and edges. This is really annoying for an SVCD output..

Anyone know how to solve this?

    Thanks

    Rob

you could go for xsvcd at 720x480 but compatibility might be a problem. some dvd players might not play them.

  3. there are a couple of things to my knowledge that can cause this
i always have success in good quality svcd's
    heres what i look for
first of all when you are encoding are you doing it on high quality or highest quality
if you are encoding using the default (assuming you are usng Tmpgenc), the default is the fastest conversion
its called motion estimate precision or something like that which encodes at a very fast speed and doesnt do a good job of cleanliness
another thing that you may be doiing is trying to fit all of this on one cd, which would cause the bitrate to drop, which would make your quality drop, giving you terrible pixelation
when i convert an svcd, when all is said and done, i usually end up with about 3 or 4 cd's worth of a movie, becuase i go for the highest quality
try those settings if you are using tmpgenc....and if you arent....GET IT!!!!
where would i be without it
theres a link for it in the tools section of this site
    any other help just ask

  4. I'm using TMPGENC (I'm getting quite familiar with it now...) its always been fine for all my other conversions. Usually converting Divx to SVCD MPEGS is fine, but with XVID I get this reduction in resolution.

I tried the slow and high quality setting, but that makes no difference. The picture you get out is very clean, but just seems to be a lower resolution than SVCD normally gives you.

I usually split my movies onto about 3 SVCDs (the bitrate is about 1600) so I don't think that is the problem either...

I've read that just because you have an XVID Codec that lets you play the file ok doesn't mean that you can convert it fine. I was wondering if that might be something to do with it. Know of which is the best XVID Codec to use?

  5. I use this XVid codec
    http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html
also when i am converting from a dvd source or an avi file that is perfect quality...the files usually end up taking up 4 cd's because i let the bitrate go as high as it can
try that too becuase i think thats where your problem is
the default bitrate is 2520..... to leave it at that...thats what i always do and it works great
    good luck!
