  1. Ok, so it goes like this. Where i'm at uni people share avi files of movies and stuff over our big fat fast network. I'm assuming the files have been created to fit onto a VCD because most of them are between 650 and 700 mb or split into two files of about this size. It stands to reason, huh? When I try to burn these to a VCD with Nero 5 it adds a big load of other stuff onto the CD so it can't all fit onto one CD. Or are the extra files minimal but there is some kind of conversion going on here that makes the movie to big. Do I need some kind of codec up date or something. Surely all these people havn't been making these things too big for VCDs. Please help me cos I am confused and stupid. Thanks.

    When you convert an AVI file to a MPEG-1 file for a VCD, the file size will usually increase. The avi file are probabally encoded with DivX, which is more efficient than MPEG-1, and results in smaller file sizes. The movies are probabally cut to 700Mb AVI file chunks by your friends so that they can be burnt onto a normal Data CD.

    You can fit 74 mins of movie onto a normal CD, 80 mins on the more common 80min / 700Mb ones you see around these days.

    Look at the How-To's on this site - what I do is to join the avi files into one big file, and then convert this, using TMPGEnc, to a VCD complient MPEG 1 file. Then, chop this into 74 / 80 min chunks using the MPEG Tools in TMPGEnc for burning onto VCD in Nero. Converting in Nero isn't reccomended, as the quality isn't as good as TMPGEnc IMHO.

    Hope this helps.

    Sorry Sam, that should read;

    'You can fit 74 mins of MPEG 1 movie onto a VCD using a normal CDR, 80 mins on the more common 80min / 700Mb CDR's you see around these days. '
