  1. Anyone use there old Playstation to watch VCD's? I have an old PSX which I'm thinking of buying the VCD add on which converts it to a "top notch" VCD player (if u believe the sales people)....

    Anyone tried this...?

Don't bother. I used one for a while but the playback quality was just ok. The picture would break up alot and near the end of the movie it got really bad because the console would get really hot. The psx is not meant to constantly read from a disk for hours at a time. Watch the disk while playing games; it only reads the disk for a few secs at a time usually. Playing vcds on your psx will absolutely kill your laser for the above mentioned reasons. My laser died about 3 months after using the vcd addon.

I'm not sure what these addons run for now but mine was about $50 US at the time. For only about another $10 you can buy a cheap dvd player with real vcd support.

  4. I have one of those minteks and I contend with that arguement.

It only plays SVCDs with the header trick. I can't get an SVCD to play smoothly above 2000-2100 bitrate (2000 works fine, 2500 is too skippy and jittery...it also has a lot of artifacts, and makes frequent pauses and skips sometimes 3,4,5 minutes of what I had), i couldn't get Xvcds or XSvcds to play....

For plain VCDs it is fine, and for SVCDs with the header trick, and a bitrate is 2000 or less it is also fine (but for me 2000 is fine since I only watch animes. I'm not going to rip a movie onto 3-4 discs :P I'd rather wait till its onsale or something)

But I would hesitate at the Mintek...because I was hoping it would be CvDs (Chaojo...the compromise with China CD and the other one supportted by all the major conglomerates) because you can get 30-35 minutes of DVD like quality on a CD (which would have been perfect for anime since most episode are just shy of 25 minutes)
