here's my story:
I started with the Sony DRU110A (DVD+RW only), burned numerous DVD's with Memorex and Philips DVD+RW's, Nero 5.5.9.9 (settings: DVD ISO/UDF, 1.02). All worked perfect on my Apex 1200 and portable Toshiba TV/DVD (9") player. These discs wouldn't play on my Aiwa DV370, though (but that didn't bother me).
Now I have the Sony DRU500A (firmware 1.0f). I upgraded Nero to 5.5.10.0. I am using Verbatim Datalifeplus DVD+/-R. I used the same setting as with the aforementioned DVD+RW's (DVD ISO/UDF, 1.02). These discs won't play on the Apex or the Toshiba, but will play on the older (bought in 1999) Aiwa DV370.
Can anyone offer any advise about a universal media/method, such that the discs will play in all the players. Any help would be appreciated.
I am currently attempting to use RecordNow (came with the DRU500) to see if this will resolve the issue.

There is a big thread about the Dru500a media there:

But there is a problem with Verbatim DVD-R and this drive, so it may be what cause your problem. -
There are numerous posts about the latest Nero burning less the perfect DVD's. There are also many who have no issues with Nero, but the DRU500A is not on the supported device list, so....
RecordNow works every time with my DRU500A._________________

Yes there is an insert in with the Sony drives stating certain Verbatim media older than Oct 31, 2002 has a problem with the DRU-500A. And there are some issues with Nero 5.5.10.0. Some people have gone back to 5.5.9.17.0 others use other programs. Ulead DVD Moviefactory has worked fine for me. Recordnow has worked for others.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
here's an update:
i have tried burning with the RecordNow program incorporated with the drive (version 4.50, its plain-old RecordNow, not Max, not Pro, etc.).
so far i have succeeded with burning to a Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R that plays in all my players (Apex 1200, Aiwa DV370, Toshiba 9" portable TV/DVD player)
now i will try with a DVD+R!!
must be a problem between Nero and the DRU500A -
I just received my new DRU500 and was not aware of the issue with memorex media. I upgraded to the 1.0F firmware ran a few tests with +RW that worked fine. I then proceeded to make three coasters for three attmepts with memorex -R's.
So I would say there is still a problem here.
After making the coasters I tested with some Imation -R's which worked fine and then ordered some Ritek -R's I have not had a single problem with them either.

Intersting. Tnks for the info!
Waiting on mine right now. Xmas gift from parents.Got a box of DVD-R and +R in the deal.
Have any one tried the inhouse CompUSA branded disk? Just wondering. -
I use princo DVD-R that comes in spindle and there is no problem, the downside is that they can't be burned at more than 1x for those I have.
