First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you !
I have a Pioneer DVD-R A05, and my system is based on Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz with 512 DDR RAM.
I tryed last night to authoring in Ulead WorkShop 1.3 my aprox. 700 MB DIVX in my DVD-R A05. I add three menu whith playback sound on each menu.
Finaly after a very loooooooooooong fight about what settings I should check to fit in my DVD-R 4.7 GB I had a chance to hit burn DVD button. I choose to convert to MPEG audio, because I can change the bit rate and drop down the size of the final project.
It says should go for about 2-1/2 hours. I leave during the night to work, and in the morning I just can wake up to check my DVD and ... surprize ... was still writing ...
So was about about 5 hours in total, and still there was another 1-1/2 hours to work .
My question is if this is normal to take so long ?
And the last question is for Workshop users : Which is the best settings to burning a DVD 4.7 Gb disk to get the best quality when you like to copy your divx files onto a dvd-r format ?
I have another question for workshop users, but is better to open another thread.
Thanks for any input !![]()

Ice,
I don't use Ulead DVDWS to author my DVD-r's but use TMPGEnc to encode my DIVX files to a DVD compatible file and then Spruce Up to author the DVD.
I have an AMD 2100+ CPU with 512MB DDR ram and it takes about that long on my system for the complete process depending naturally on the length of the original DIVX file and whether burning at 1x or 2x (Pioneer 104). So your numbers are about right. I have a friend that just got into DIVX and encoding to SVCD's and his system took over 20 hours just to process with his 3 year old Pentium 3. Now mine and your numbers don't look so bad...
The whole video thing takes a LONG time no matter how big a "beast" a user has.
Best of luck

Hi icevideo,
Happy New Year to you too.
Seems like you are using DVDWS's built-in encoder. I would suggest that you use TMPGEnc or CCE for doing the encoding to MPEG2 prior to going into DVD Workshop.
Also, you did not mention how long is your original Divx video. So, it's a little hard to guess about the time issue without that info. Anyway, encoding always takes a long time.
If you don't mind, please post your other questions about DVD Workshop on the topic "DVD WORKSHOP TIPS & TRICKS". I am trying to gather all DVDWS users, and all the TIPS, TRICKS, QUESTIONS and WORKAROUNDS on a unique topic. It has received a lot of views, and maybe, who know, we might ask the forum administrator to establish a specific forum for DVDWS later on.
Thank's. -
Thanks for reply to both of you.
Yes if you want, I will repost there my question.
So TMPGEnc is the best way to convert your divx in mpeg dvd format. If you don't mind which is the best version of TMPGEnc used for this conversion to dvd format ?
Thank you -
Ice,
Any of the newer versions of TMPGEnc will work fine. I don't remember which version it was that introduced the "project wizard" but it makes selecting the final output format type easy in a step by step procedure..
Rick -
I download the latest version and is working. The problem I have a limitation for 30 days. After that I will see what I'll do.
Now I did the encoding last night. But now I'm waiting for answer to see which is the best settings to burn a DVD 4.7 Gb disk to get the best quality when you like to copy your *.m2v files onto a dvd-r format ?
Thanks -
Ice,
In the TMPGEnc encoder I select one of the VBR settings in the project wizard. The times are listed as follows:
3000kbps for 120 mins
4000kbps for 100 mins
6000kbps for 75 mins
7000kbps for 65 mins
So the "best" setting you are looking for will depend on the movie length. You mentioned your movie was 82 mins. long. My guess is with the way VBR encodes you could still use the 6000kbps setting and it still fit on a DVD-R even though you are over the "estimated 75 mins" by 7 mins.

Thanks Rick.
Yes, I know what you mean, but after authoring in Workshop the file doesn't become much bigger ?
Maybe I was not very clear, I need to know the settings in Ulead Workshop when you rich the point Finish , and not in TMPGEnc.
Sorry if I confused you
BTW I think I should choose the same theory like Rick just post before :
3000kbps for 120 mins
4000kbps for 100 mins
6000kbps for 75 mins
7000kbps for 65 mins -
Ice,
Sorry I did misunderstand you but after re-reading your first post you did ask about the final settings in DVD W/S..Old age I guess...
As I said in my first response I don't use DVD W/S but I do have it loaded but have never used it to finish authoring my DVD's so I can't offer anything about the final settings you are seeking. I would agree with you that the final product would be bigger if you had menu's or extras added like you mentioned. Maybe someone that uses DVD W/S can offer some insight.
Good Luck with your new burner..
Rick
