Cendyne 4x DVD-R burner for $169 (after $50 mail-in rebate)
It is a re-badged Pioneer 105.
In store offer only at OFFICEMAX.
And at least valid to Jan-4 2003
Make sure you get the gold version instead of the blue box (2x only)
A firmware will come out soon so you can use cheap 2x dvd-r media on the 4x drive.
I'm been told it can only use cheap 1x media and good 4x media for now.
P.S This drive is not DVD+R/+RW, so better check to see if your standalone dvd player can handle dash R

I bought the Cendyne 4x dvr-105 from Staples last week for $299 (they had the dvr-104 for the same exact price). The ad in the officemax flier showed the box for the dvr-104 but said models vary by store. Went back to Staples for a price match but would not refund the difference from the OfficeMax offer. The manager said I would need to bring in the original box so he could see if it was the blue or Gold box. I asked if I could return the drive and he said I could, but he kept trying to talk me into bringing in the box instead. I said that if I had to do that I would go to officeMax and buy the advertised drive and bring back the other one and he said fine.
So, I left and went to OfficeMax willing to buy the blue box. The price difference was enough to buy the slower speed for me. They were not on the shelf, just an empty box. Asked the sales associate if they had any in stock, and he said yes and the brought me the Gold box DVR-105. It rang up at the advertised price.
I went back to Staples and returned the other drive and they asked if anything was wrong and I said no and that it was cheaper at OfficeMax. He asked how much and I told him and he was very angry at the price and said it could not be for the same model. I had a friend run out to the car to get the box for the drive to prove to them it was the same. He was pretty upset. I have used the drive for a week and really like the capabilities in my limited use and really like the price. My experiences with Staples on similar matters have not been pleasant and they can be nasty about things. I hesitated at buying from them, but they were the only ones that had any kind of DVD -R/-RW drives.
The only thing now I am concerned about is if Cendyne will honor the rebate. -
Who is the rebate being handled by..Officemax?? Or a seperate rebate corporation behalf of officemax..like RebatesHQ or the express group.
Officemax might be more accepting..
but if it is being handled independtly, then it will be a b!tch. I hate those 2. They will ALWAYS say that the UPC is invalid, and then you have to call & get the run around with them. So be careful. -
It says to send rebate to:
CenDyne Rebate Offer
02-51728
P.O. Box 028515
Miami, Fl 33102-8515 -
ok that sounds like thats being handled by Cendyne itself. RabatesHQ is in TX, and express group is in MN. Still good luck, they can be very icky & a pain sometimes with those rebates.

Just got mine this morning, they had the display box for the 2X(blue lettering) but when the stock person brought it out, it was the box with the gold lettering so I knew I was getting the 4X drive. Installing it later tonight.
-
Thanks, just went and got one before they closed tonight. What a steal! I am sure once the word is out, they will not last long!!!
As far as the rebate thing goes.... Yes, they are a pain, make sure you copy everything you send in (including the UPC). If you do not receive your check in a timely manner, just go back to the store and demand a refund for the rebate amount. They should honor it! EITHER WAY, purchase the item using a credit card, then they have no recourse! -

And as for RebatesHq they are nothing but a bunch of crooks, they denied me a rebate for somthing that I bought from BUY.com because the receipt was printed off from my printer and not an original in store receipt How f@#$ up is that "In store receipt from BUY.com"

Yes indeed they are Rodney..
Everytime I send in a rebate, ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS, it comes back with invalid UPC code. And they think they are so "effin" slick by doing this. Knowing that you sent the original UPC the 1st time, how in hell are suppose to come up with the suppose "valid one". Next time, I gonna send in the whole box for the item.
Anyway, then you call them and get their stupid automated loop, in which I finally figured out which answers to prompts actually gives you a live voice. Explain to them that they already have my original UPC, only to be told..."ok, we'll make an exception just this one time & put your rebate through". I have literally been given this BS exception story easily 8+ times now. Its shame you have to "beg, borrow, & deal" just to get sometimes a measly 10 bucks back. This why I try to do most of my stuff through pricewatch or something, rather not deal with a rebate. But sometimes the offers are just too good like on this cendyne. O well, enough of my rant. -
I ordered last week 25 DVD-R (princo) from allmedia.com, will these work in the Cendyne DVR-105?

Ive burnt about 20 movies with no coasters. The edges of the disk
are a little rough so you may have to smooth them a little with something
hard so they don't rattle around in your drive.
Good Luck

I was able to get my CenDyne today, after going to two different OfficeMax. The first one was out, so they were kind enough to call the second store. When I arrived, I was pleased to see all they had left were the 4x Burners, for the same price. I was going to wait and buy the Sony DRU500. but I figured this was such a good price I would go with this one. Hopefully the rebate will come through, thanks the tip! Anyone looking for one of these better hurry, they are flying out of OfficeMax.
Cheers,

I think I'll have to go pick this one up tomorow and give my Dad my old 104.

Got one of these Sunday and was pleasantly surprised when it was the 4X drive. Just picked up a Mintek-1600 from Best Buy, and they seem to make a very good combo. Write it off, pop it in, and it works! I was going to take it back if I decided I had to have +r instead, but it's hard to argue with the price!

Update in Buffalo area, Blue box off of shelf, now just the gold, but price listed is $279 - $50 rebate only to make it $229. Oh well if ya snoozed ya loozed.
-
About the update in Buffalo...
Boogieman you are somewhat correct. Don't believe the tag, they will ring it up at $219...trust me, I got and thought the same thing and was definitely ready to complain. Considering the ad says models will vary by store
So $219 still... -
Yup, I got one of the OfficeMax 4x deals too, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the Nero Express package that came with the burner. Using the wizard is easy enough but when I get to the last page (where you select the burner, the speed, etc.), my player spins the disc up and then spins down, over and over until I hit the "Go!" button. The program is VERY slow to respond to input during this cycling (on the order of 4-5 seconds between my click and the program's recognition of my input). I was using CD-R media (some generic Pacific Digital 74-min stuff and some Imation 8x 80-min as well) but I haven't tried with the included DVD-RW yet.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? I thought perhaps it was a firmware issue but Cendyne doesn't have any updates yet. Hmmm...
Other info:
brand new, clean install of Win2k on an AMD Athlon XP 2100, Asus motherboard (VIA 266 chipset)
Thanks for any help! -
I found this forum by accident, but im sure glad i did. I got the 4x deal from office max after convincing the ass manager to go look to see if he had it in stock, after an associate had told me no. Im so happy that i just saved $100 that i decided to sign up for the forum just to say thanx. Since i got no idea what im doing from this point on, im sure that i'll be back, with plenty of questons.
thanx! -
Local OM sold out on Sunday but told me they will restock it by Thursday evening. Went to pick a 4x one yesterday. Cendyne rebate is ok, I got 2 checks. Not fast but finally they send to us.
