Often (nearly, but not, always) when i try to reencode DivX movie to VCD, SVCD or KVCD, the encode process fails regardless of the method I use.

Some examples
  • TMPGEnc (2.59) gives a read error when using the AVI directly
    AVISynth (2.07 & 2.06)produces a black video with a red error message
Using VDub (1.4.9 & 1.4.13) as a frameserver crashes with the vdub extended crash box
CCE (2.5 and 2.64) sometimes hangs, sometimes gives a read error in the logfile, sometimes gives a windows exception.

My suspicion is the codecs as they are the only common thing, (and DivX5 are more reliable than 3 or 4). I've had a number of different codecs installed - Nimo 5.0 Build 8 (installed and deinstalled several times selecting different options), Nimo 5.0 lite (installed and deinstalled), DivX 5.02 Pro, Koepi XviD, and maybe a few more.

Is there a way of cleaning up the codecs (i.e. completely deleting all trace of them) prior to reinstalling?

Anybody got any good advice about which codecs to install? (3.11 Alpha, 4.0, 5.02 etc)

However, GSPOT and AVICodec both suggest that the codecs are correct?so perhaps it's not the codecs - any other ideas about what might be causing the problem?

Sorry for the long post (I hope it makes sense !!!), but it's starting to drive me mad
