  1. Does it matter if DMA is switched off or on?

Turn it on. Having DMA on should boost hard drive read write access times.

  3. Hi,

Most systems using Win9X or XP recommend that the hardware be set for "Auto" regards to DMA.. if the drive(s) are on the secondary IDE connector, they should default to "Ultra DMA 33" through "Ultra DMA 100" (these may also be called DMA Mode 2 through DMA Mode 5). If the drive settings change to any of the PIO modes, either the controller, the drive(s) or the software drivers are out of date.

Also, the setting for "Auto Disconnect" should be unchecked..

    Hope that helps.

  4. Thankyou. Hopefully my DVD writer will write (or close) the DVD properly if I have all the settings right. It appears to leave a gap of unwritten disc a few mm from the inside edge.

  5. DMA on should give best performance, unless it doesn't work, in which case turn it off.

    LOL - Classic

"Sir, how do I get to the mall?"
"Go to the next street and take a right. If that is not it, then take a left instead"

  7. If you've got some cheap media that's not working at 1x on your burner is it worth it to try turning off DMA? DMA off for the hard drive, burner or both? Or will it not make any difference as far as the burn process if the media isn't compatible with your DVD-R drive?

You could always give it a shot, but to be honest with you.. I do not think it would help you at all.
