Okay, for the last week or so I've been reading, studying, and learning about this process of DVD2DVDR and so far I've only been successful in making (2) backup copies and about 7 coasters. Everyday is a different day, even though I don’t do shit to my computer. Some days the software works, some days it doesn’t. I’m starting to think that buying my burner was a big waste of !@*! money! Ok, now that I got that out of the way.....I am trying to split the movie Memento into (2) DVD-R's (because I want to, so don’t try to convince me otherwise) and I follow the "Split a DVD to 2 DVD-Rs" guide @ Doom9 to a tee but yet I’m having problems playing the movie in my Toshiba SDR3750 standalone. I use the wizard (because doing it manually rejects my media which is Princo 2X) in RecordnowMax to burn the first split set with relatively no problems. After the burning process is complete, the movie will flawlessly play in WinDVD but when I put it in my standalone, all I get is the "Columbia Tristar" screen then THATS IT! It just freezes! I can't do anything past that. What am I doing wrong? If made a mistake in IfoEdit, would it not be able to play in WinDVD? I have a Toshiba SDR5002 burner and am using Princo 2X media. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i'm not too skilled in this area.. but i do know that if you rip your dvd's through dvd decrypter you can have it detect mastering errors... which may be the reason you're only getting the columbia tri-star logo.. its worth a shot and wont take long..
-
Jeex, I did rip the entire DVD with Decrypter then used IfoEdit to split it. Chaned the start time of the 2nd DVD and got "VTS sectors". Like I said, it played well in WinDVD but not my standalone. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Live Long, Play Hard, Think BIG! -
Sounds like it could be a burning problem. If it plays on your PC (assume off of HD) but not standalone that's off then the case.
How are you burning? Make sure you are burning in UDF 1.02 and NOT UDF 1.05 (Nero default). Take a look to the left to see how to do this.
What I do is create a disc image with the IFO Edit Imaging Tools, then burn w/ DVD Decrtptor (all freeware). Nero f&cked up 7 discs I tried to burn. -
It stupid recomenfation, but don't burn R until it works, You willavoid coasters. Use + or - RW. Maybe movie is not that easy to copy.
When you play it on your PC, do you use DVD disk or hrom HD ?Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
@Vejita: I will check the setting in Recordnowmax to see if it is burning at UDF 1.02. I've been very unsuccessful with Nero so Im not going there.
@donpedro: I actually play the movie off of my burnt DVD on WINDVD and it works great.
Maybe its my media. Hell, I dont know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Live Long, Play Hard, Think BIG! -
Well.... Simple sugestion came to my mind ... Try different player... friends, neibhbour or close by store.
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
I had the exact same problem with crocdile hunter, i used ifoedit to strip the vob id for the begining logo. When it freezes on your stand alone, hit stop then play again, see if it plays.
-
kpoman, windvd doesnt have nothing to do with a set-top dvd,
itll read any vob file, which you can double-check before you
burn, here's a little clue to ur problem, are you using spruce-up
or dvd maestro? same prog i think, when you re-combine the
audio and video, go back to ifoedit for the hell of it, take out the
video_ts.vob along with vts_01_0.vob, those are just spruce-up
logo screens, then i click get vts sectors, then i burn with nero...
this is for dvd2dvdr..... -
SpruceUp and Maestro are not the same program. And Maestro doesn't put in logo screens. It puts my menu in vts_01_0.vob.
With RecordMax, you don't have to worry about the 1.02 vs 1.05 UDF. RecordMax automatically gets it right, and is more compatibile without having to make those types of changes. -
I'm glad you laid out this post. I got the Sony DRU 500A around Christmas, and was so excited. I hooked the thing up, and had been doing a month or so of research into the dvd to dvd-r process. Since then, I've been attempting to backup my dvd's with very little success. I did successfully burn Basic Instinct, (conveniently a DVD-5), but failed to backup both spinal tap and lord of the rings (both DVD-9). By success, I mean it plays in my Hitachi HDV-R100 standalone. All the attempts have played in my PowerDVD software (from HD and from DVD-R burned copy), but in ifoEDIT I get a error message saying 2 of 3 streams failed, and it doesn't work. Basic Instinct which did work in the standalone also has the ifoEDIT error message. And since this works, I know my standalone accepts My DVD-R Memorex discs, and can play them. I've tried every combination imaginable of DVD Decryptor, SmartRipper, IfoEDIT, DVD2AVI, DVD2SVCD, CinemaCraft Encoder, TMPenc, SpruceUP, Maestro, Nero and RecordNow. I've even tried out DVDXCOPY!!! The Basic Instinct version was done using DVD decryptor, DVD2AVI, Cinema Craft Encoder, Spruce UP, and Record Now. I feel like I've got a good grasp on all the files you need, and what programs should be used in what sequence, but I'm still having tons of problems, and I could only get 2 outputs from the trial version of SpruceUP, so I've been experimenting with Maestro of late. Can anyone give some pointers on what's been going on? This whole process is a very humbling experience indeed, but hopefully all the heartache will be exponentially rewarded.
-
It sounds like you spend a lot of money on software trying.
Since IFOedit is where you are getting the error, try something else. Maestro works well for me. Burn with RecordNow Max. -
Splitting DVD is a joke no wonder you are having problems.I don't know why you are splitting the movie. Get rid of the crap, Hollywood commercials and use the only part you need. then turn and burn real DVD. MY OPINION

This is only for DVD9's that can not be reduced to a workable 4.7 (4.3 GB by ripping just the main movie or all of it if size willing, if so It is just a straight rip and burn with (DVDDecrypter), another good freeware program, or whatever program you prefer.
I have had great success with this method on DVD9to5. It is not all freeware but I have spent many nights and countless time on a lot of software and found this method flawless, if followed precisely, on each attempt. You have to decide for your self what works for you time, cost quality, ect. I have made many, many copy's of my DVD's and no costers since I started using this process. None of this is my software nor do I have any affiliation with the software providers I just know it makes great DVD's and it is all still available unlike most of the guides I tried that get you half way through the process and then you find out some of the software or other necessary component does not exist any more or costs an arm and a leg.

@Ripper: I already tried that but nothing happened. As soon as the logo is done, it freezes. I have not tried to use IfoEdit to strip out the VOB ID for the beginning logo though. Why should I have to? The guide on Doom9 says nothing about this.
@Musher: I’m not combining video and audio here. I am strictly following the Doom9 guide as I stated earlier in this post. Does anybody pay attention to the original post? Are you saying that I should use Maestro instead of IfoEdit? Damn! Not another freakin' guide!
@DoggieDaddy: I need HELP, not opinions. I WANT to split the DVD okay. I tried stripping out all the extras but the movie is still too large to fit on one DVD5. I’m not in the business of muxing, remuxing, encoding (and all that other bullshit)....I just want the original copy!!!!! Is that too much to ask!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will look at your guide, however, I need help with what I could be doing wrong with respect to the Doom9 guide that is located at http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm
Also, some other notes. I just backed up one of my Christmas DVD's (The year without a Santa Claus) and it was the perfect size. All of it fit onto a DVD5 (I used a TDK DVD-RW) and it worked perfect in my standalone so I do not believe its my player. I believe I may have screwed up one of the steps in the Doom9 guide, particularly the 2nd step where it demonstrates how to split the DVD. I get a little confused in distributing the files. Can anybody out there help simplify these crucial steps? Thanks.Live Long, Play Hard, Think BIG! -

I'm gonna watch this debate with some interest as I too am trying to rip and burn a copy of Memento (brill film by the way - sorry i'm drifting) my success has been a BIG FAT ZERO so far using smartripper to rip JUST the movie, ifoedit to recreate the video_ts files and then NERO to burn baby burn - only thing I can play the resultant discs in is WinDVD or some other PowerDVD... as much use as a chocolate fire guard. I have a ricoh MP5125A burner and a wharfdale 750 standalone player.

@Jason: Particularily this step:
The next step is selecting a suitable splitting point. By default IfoEdit selects the layer switch point. This may work in most cases, however you have to be aware that certain additional files will have to be copies to both discs afterwards. First of all each movie must have a VTS1 titleset. This means that VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO and VTS_01_0.BUP must be on both discs. This is no problem if the movie is contained in this titleset (most DVDs) but in our example this is not the case. The 2nd constraint is that each menu must be on both discs. So if there's a VTS_XY_0.VOB it has to be on both discs, including the associated .IFO and .BUP files. Last but not least VIDEO_TS.VOB, VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP must also be present on both discs. In my case these files (VIDEO_TS.*, VTS_01_*) are not that large but just in case I selected the chapter split point at Chapter 15 rather than the default of Cell 48. Unfortunately as of now there's no exact splitsize calculation so you won't know how much space the files will take up after splitting but that should be added in a future version.
And this step.....
As written before you must now add the first titleset to both discs. In our case that's VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO and VTS_01_0.BUP. since VTS_01_1.VOB is small I put in on both discs too but normally you would put extras on one disc only. Then you have to distribute the extras (VTS_03 - VTS_07) over the two discs. I put all these files on the 2nd disc.
Memento has the main titleset in VTS_02_*. What exactly should both my disks look like as far as files? Thanks.Live Long, Play Hard, Think BIG! -
why are you splitting it, just let DVD2DVDR re-encode the DVD to fit on one DVD+R or -R it takes only 3-4 hours and the resulting movie is fantastic. I have done over 100 DVD's either on DVD2DVDR or DVDxCOPY burned using NERO in DVD-ROM 1.02 without one coaster. About the only time I need 2 DVD+R's is when I put the extras on one DVD+R with DVDxCOPY then the movie on another disc using DVD2DVDR, works great for me.

In total contradiction to my previous post, I have had success alas! So the only thing I changed was using Cinema Craft Encoder rather than TMPenc for encoding through DVD2SVCD. I went DVD-9 to DVD-5 without menus, but with chapters. Anyhow, I used the rip DVD option on DVD2SVCD with the changes outlined in some of the other guides. Rather than using TMPenc in DVD2SVCD, I set it for CCE. An AC3 and 2 MPV's came out. I used the pulldown encoded version of the .MPV. I popped them in Maestro and added my chapter point file from chapter extractor. It muxed my master, output a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS file, which went into RecordNow (good suggestion, I'm not so faithful in Nero). Great Quality, just no menu. I'm ecstatic, and couldn't have done it without these great guides and help from those with more experience. thanks to all.
for the record, I'm using the Sony DRU-500A, with Memorex DVD-R, and a Hitachi HDV-R100 stand alone. It's really weird, but I think that TMPenc was the problem all along. Has anyone had similar troubles with this method? Also, Power DVD plays the disc, as does the standalone, but if I load IFOedit, and try to play the VTS_01_0.IFO, I still get the error message that 2 of 3 streams failed. Is this check of the DVD only valid if the files were created via the IFOedit ? again, thanks for all the help. -
You basically used the same method as me except I use DVD Decryptor or SmartRipper instead of DVD2SVCD, and manually force frame, encode, pulldown. Although, I plan to try DVD2SVCD. Also, I'm using Maestro and RecordNow Max. I haven't had a need for IFOedit, and considering it has a bug with NTSC, I have avoided it.

Give me a break man. If you want an ORIGINAL copy get your cheap butt out and buy one. Instead of griping that everyone's suggestions don't work for you, why don't you put forth a little effort and learn to do it yourself? People try to help you out and you act like a chump.

kpoman,
You have been trying for a whole week, WOW. And as far as the coasters go here is a thought RW. Here is another opinion of mine also, now that I read your last few posts. You are at the wrong site, DVD encoding is a choice, try this one instead.

Hey, Guys,
Is this the right place to ask why I can't burn the second half of a split VCD with CDRWin 5.02. My filews split to, mebbe 550 meg and 250 meg, boot CDRWin, drag, drop, burn Disk 1, no prob. Take out, try in standalone DVD player, all's well. Can't delete part one from compilation, add part 2, hilite part 2, burn, success, try, no disk, read disk in computer, all free, try to reboot, reburn, disk no good.
Put in new disk, burn, success. Try in DVD player, no disk.
what'm I doing wrong. Nero's no help. Puit in a 500 meg movie file to burn and it says 900 meg, try a larger medum. Nero takes 2 or 300 megabytes overhead? That is ridiculous.
I just bought a stack of 90 minute, 790 meg discs, Nero tests them, says I can overburn to 800+ meg, 12%+ over, yet, when I try to burn, try a larger medum.
I went to buy the Nero plug in, but it will do DVDs and SVCDs, MPEG2s. VCDs require MPEG1, as far as these forums can tell me.
What the heck should I be using?
Thanks, George -
@alenhard: Dude, chill out. I OWN Memento, so before you go making accusations, maybe you should "get off your butt" and ask me first. I did not mean to "gripe" as you put it. I’m frustrated with this stuff, yet I want to learn. Look, I have kids, kids break things. I want to make an exact backup copy of Memento. Thats all. So be part of the solution, not the problem ya "chump".
@Doggiedaddy: Thanks. Yes, I am now testing with an -RW so as not to make coasters, but I still can't get the split to work. As far as buying Memento...I ALREADY OWN IT! (Refer to above response to alenhard)
@Gandyman: Yes, I'm trying to learn. I used IfoEdit to originally split the disk. However, Memento's main titleset is in the VTS_02_* VOB's so after the split I copied all the VTS_01_* files to BOTH split directories. I will post what the split looks like when I get home tonight. Thanks for the help.Live Long, Play Hard, Think BIG!
