i being a former divx pro fan will point you in a direction you will never come back from. install the newest xvid release and use this document http://forum.doom9.org/attachment.php?s=f986dbae1fb2888412dc76bb7c1c48e6&postid=231651 dude i am tellin ya you will EASILY get right at dvd quality xvid blows divxpro 5.02 out of the water with ease.
be warned only use the codec along with the document if you want awsome 1 or 2 disk xvid encodes.hehe my xvid encodes on my 27" and 35" looks completely wonderful.

the guide is for encoding only.
in the advanced tab when encoding i set my fourcc to xvid so it uses the xvid codec to decode if you have to much trouble just install lates ffdshow. the only thing i have trouble with playback is when i use ogg for audio and the ogm container but i know its only because of my newbiness. but if i use avi container and no ogg audio it comes out perfect. i use zoomplayer set my aspect ratio and set back and watch. -
I have yet to see xvid blow my divx encodes... 3ivx is coming back too. not the best at encoding so far, but it seems to be ok at encoding.... Anyways. Just my 2 cents.

the 29122002 release does a pretty good job at it. IMO. i know you cant turn the heads of a die hard divx fan and thats not what im trying to do. i mean i even bought the pro version and now regret doing so seeing there is a codec that is *to be fair* EQUALLY good if not better for freeeeee.
got to admit divx is way overdue for an update. xvid will leave divx in its dust if there not careful. dont get my wrong i would love to see a divx update that would make me eat my words and hide in the corner with shame.but for now ummm im not.
just my 2 cents too.

oh yeah before this starts some kind of codec war let me just rewrite a few things.
xvid blows the current divx away as far as quality encodes IN MY EYES. all statments made by me can be takin how ever anyone wants to take em. they are simply my opinions.

Well, I don't think xvid still beats DivX (yes, if I didn't buy it yet, maybe I'd go down the xvid way instead...) But the other part is just too true. DivX seems really stagnant. XviD and even 3ivx are making a lot of progress... Unless they're keeping DivX 6 as a big well kept secret that will have a lot of improvement... Y'know. If it keeps going like that, I'll end up switching to something else some day, but right now, DivX 5 Pro 2Pass VBR it still is
As a side note, the latest ffdshow is supposed to fix some problems with some xvid encoded stuff...
Also, judging a codec isn't quite as simple as most think. Some codecs have a better decompression filter than encoding one (3ivx). You have to judge them with really speficic setups, and it's a pain :/ -
