  1. Hi All,
I heard HC produces 'the best quality mpeg2 encoding'. I downloaded it but cannot work out how to convert an avi to the mpeg2 video. All I understand is I need to use avisynth to get it working but even that application requires hand coding. Any idea how I get a video imported into the project selection in HC? There is no option to select a video file, just dgindex and avisynth files. I can't work it out.

    Thanks,
    Rauli

    Here

Guide shows how to use HC to produce the video and Aften to produce the audio.

Don't ever let the CCE fanboys hear such heresy! ^_^

Well the easiest way to see what HCenc can do is to get AVI2DVD. It's a bit quirky. Put your AVI in C: and give it a one word name. Check all your settings, PAL to NTSC or vice versa, set HCenc to 'Best' and let it go. It will take a long time but the end results are excellent. It also handles subs and does menus.

A similar free app is AVStoDVD. You will have to get HCenc separately and then set it up. I use Lancrzos4 and DGpulldown as my defaults. This app will allow you to also play around with the script if you like and has more output options, but no menus and will only do 2 channel Dolby.

You could also try FAVC. It can use HC or QuEnc for encoding and outputs a VIDEO_TS folder ready to burn with ImgBurn. Both are freeware. It also hides all the 'scripting' HC and some other programs need.

  6. Another HCEnc guide:

Just get your AviSynth script for AVI->MPEG-2 conversions from FitCD for feeding into HC. Here's the guide for that:

  7. Thanks for the input. I am still confused but I will study the posts carefully and am confident a solution can be found. When I meant 'best mpeg2 encoder' i was implying the best 'free mpeg2 encoder'.
