i did try reinstalling it a few time but it still not there. the exe i used to install is GordianKnot.SystemPack.1.0.Setup.exe it goes through the process of installing a bunch of other software like divx 5.02, vobsub, etc but it never asks where to install Gordian Knot itself. am i doing something wrong? if someone installed it and it works please give me the link to the exe so i can get that one

You are supposed to install the GordianKnot Rippack, then install the GordianKnot system pack.
I suggest tyou go to www.doom9.org and look through the guide section - specifically the DivX section - and that will tell you how to install, set up and use Gordian Knot. -
thanks i got it working and i followed the guide. at the end where it starts encoding i dont see any avi files. i thought it was going to make a divx, i used the divx5 guide. its making 2 avs files, is that what its suppose to do?
-
and its also making an mp3 file for the audio. is that what its suppose to do?

ok it converted properly. it made teh divx file but after the first 30mins the quality gets really bad and the file size is 638mb i chose 695mb. anyone know what went wrong?

ok i just tried doing it again and i get the same problem at the spot. the first 30mins are fine but after that the quality get really bad. anyone know why?

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing. I use Gordian Knot, but once I have the .avs file I use this and the bitrate indication to start up Virtualdub independently with 2-pass encoding. The beauty of Gordian Knot is you can use as little or as much of it as suits you.

i'm trying to make a divx from a dvd. is that what you do with virtualdub? i followed the guide for divx5. after it makes divx i checked it and the first 30mins are fine but after that the quality get really bad. i'm trying to find out why it goes bad

I use GK as a front-end. Launch smartripper to rip the DVD to HD. Then launch DVD2AVI to create a project file and either decode or demux the audio. Next I load the .d2v file back into Gordian Knot to crop and resize and get an indication of the bitrate I need to use. Then I save the .avs file.
This then gets loaded into Virtualdub which I start separately, and I use 2-pass encoding at the bitrate indicated by GK. The audio can be encoded to CBR .mp3 at the same time, but usually I add VBR audio after encoding the video.
This is the bare bones of the method. If you have NTSC source then you may be thionking of using the force film setting in DVD2AVI, and may need to de-interlace.
This has always give perfect results from hundreds of DVDs - only failing when the DVD has been physically damaged. -
thats almost like what i do except i let Gordian Knot eoncode with virtualdub. i dont think there is anything wrong with the dvd, its new. i also tried it on another dvd and it worked fine, no problems at all. i dont see why the other dvd gets messed up. i check the vob files with powerdvd and they look fine.

well after the first 30mins the quality gets really bad. the quality of the video and it stays bad throughout the whole movie.
-
I see. I thought perhaps you might have meant the audio and video no longer corresponded - which can happen with some multi-angle DVDs.
If you are using 2-pass DivX, and not encoding at something way under 800 kbps, then I am at a loss to know where the problem lies! -
i'll try doing it all over again. starting from the ripping. maybe the problem was somewhere there. i tried to do it with another movie and that worked fine, i dont know why this one has the problem

it worked. it looks fine. i guess something went wrong during the ripping or when i used DVD2AVI.
