I have a Panasonic SC-HT75 DVD Player that doesn't seem to like Memorex 700/80 CD-Rs. Anyone with this player (or one similar) able to recommend what works for them?

And what does everyone feel is the best CD-R media overall right now?

  2. CD-R media is so inexpensive and plentiful now that compatibility issues have mostly gone away. Your best bet is to buy a bunch of singles and test them (not cheaper but...) and then buy bulk those you found work better.

Now DVD media is still the wild west and not inexpensive.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

Odd thing is that the Panasonic will play Memorex 700/80s with music on them just fine. It won't recognize them when they're VCDs though.

I buy only Taiyo Yuden and Mitsumi and use only Taiyo Yuden for VCDs.

A 100 disc spindle of 48x 80min Taiyo Yudens go for about $33 including shipping at www.rima.com

I do buy Verbatim for CD-RWs though, usually at www.buy.com when they have free shipping. 10 pack of 24x 74min RWs are just over $10 that way.

You have to watch out with Memorex, they buy their media from different suppliers. Some of their spools are Taiyo Yuden (which is pretty high quality), some are the absolute cheapest junk they could get, and in the store you might see the two side-by-side on the shelf. If it says "made in Japan" it's probably Taiyo Yuden. If you have problems with Memorex you may also want to avoid the dirt-cheap 50/100-CD spools from Imation, I think they buy from the same supplier but I don't know for sure.

Incidentally, if you're a fan of Taiyo Yuden media you can usually get it pretty cheap in the US if you just watch for sales. Best Buy regularly has sales and mail-in rebates on Fuji 50-packs (TY is Fuji's only supplier, as far as I know). I think I have around 200 that cost an average of $5 per 50-pack.

  10. I have been thru like countless spindles or the rock-bottom-price spindles of 50/100, and I never ran into problems except one spindle that didn't want to be burned faster than 32x... Memorex ones would peel off somehow. Very weird...

Yes, the good Verbatim media (Datalife Plus, which Verbatim makes themselves) is excellent. It's just that I can get media of comparable quality for a lot cheaper because I never see Verbatim on sale.

There is also some cheap Verbatim-branded media which is made by somebody else, I think they're called Valuelife Plus or something. Those are going to be about the same quality as other generic spindles.

  13. Yes, only get the good Verbatim media (DataLife Plus). Though I don't see it in Australia anymore, any media branded by Mitsubishi is identical to Verbatim DataLife Plus discs (Verbatim being part of Mitsubishi Chemical).

Kodaks are generally good too (e.g., Kodak Ultimas).

From my perspective, I can get "cheap" media at half the price of Verbatims and Kodaks, but even they are relatively so cheap now, I go for quality. I used to buy spindles of cheap media but after having one batch go bad on me, I'm sticking with the "known goods"...

For those of you who like the Verbatim DataLife+ CDRs, I just bought a 10pack of DL+ CDRW at www.buy.com for $10.96 and saw that they also have the 50pack of DL+ CDR 48x 80min for $9.81 with free shipping after a $7.50 manufacturer rebate. Looks like the rebate ends today though.
