this is what i do on my computer:
-watch a lot of movies
-watch and record cable tv over my TV card
-convert videos (various formats; mpeg to avi/divx mostly)
-work in after effects, sony vegas, etc.
frequently, i have various problems that i'm sure of they are codec related.
so, my question is; is there any "perfect codec combination" that would satisfy all my needs?

For playback, try VLC or KMPlayer. They can play most formats without needing extra codecs. Or you might try FFDShow.
If you are trying to use end viewing codecs like Divx in After Effects or Vegas then you are simply foolish. These tools are not toys, and are not aimed at people who use video in such highly compressed formats.
If you are converting mpeg to Divx then get VideoRedo for editing (if required) and convert with AutoGK.Read my blog here.
