Can someone recommend a way to burn various vob files onto a single dvd (a demo disc if you will). I am able to use SmartRipper to extract a single chapter (gives me one vob file) and use VOBSPLIT to trim the unneeded portions of the chapter. Can I just drag the VOBs into NERO and it will do the rest or is there some other program I need to use? Thanks for the information.

  3. You need to read up on VOB structure. A single VOB is NOT playable on its own. You have to create the needed .IFO files.

    Use IFOedit.
    Create IFO's Option.
Load in your VOB, note: IF you just randomlly cut up the VOB, then you got yourself a giant paperweight. It has to be cut up at NAVIGATIONAL packs, or your new VOB is NOT authorable.
    IFOedit now Creates NEW IFO's
Burn files with NERO, after making sure they play on the computer (WinDVD).

    THats it

Thanks for the response VidHack. I am scheduled to receive my DRU500A sometime this week and would like to understand some of this ahead of time 8) . I understand that a single VOB will not play on its own but I was hoping that NERO (or any burning package for that matter ) would create the proper file structure. I guess you are telling me this will not work. I have been reading a lot of different guides on IFOEDIT as it seems to be the key to editing down dvds. I suppose I will continue with that route.

As far as cutting up VOBs at NAVIGATIONAL packs - how is this accomplished? I simply loaded my VOB into VOBSPLIT, made my edits, and ended up with a VOB still playable by PowerDVD. Why would it not play in a standalone (with the appropriate IFO and BUP files)? Thanks for any information and please forgive my ignorance

  6. Hello Again,

I bit of info for you about VOBS. They contain not only the video and audio information. They have other needed packets of information contained within the data stream. Some are NAVIGATIONAL packs. How do you think your DVD player knows where a Chapter Point is? Not only is that information contained within the .IFO file its in the VOB as well. Actually, if you use IFOedits 'Create IFO' option, it scans the VOB data stream for these NAV Packs and then generates the .IFO that now matches the stream info. If that doesnt make sense to you, then you have a long journey ahead.
You see, if you randomly chop up a VOB, and dont adjust the .IFO file, your pointers are all WRONG. The DVD player HANGS/LOCKS-UP. To properly cut up VOBS, do this....

load you chopped up VOB into VOBedit.
Look to the left side of your monitor, at the LBA.
LBA 000000 , Should be a NAVIGATIONAL PACK
If not, scan down the file and find the first one.
Write down the LBA of this first Nav Pack.
    Load your VOB into vStrip
Enter the LBA you wrote down into START LBA
    SAVE FILE

This now re-Cut your old VOB into a NEW VOB with the first pack=NAV Pack.

Now you can use IFOedit to 'CreateIFO' and if all goes well, it generates all the necessary files for you to burn with NERO, put them in the VIDEO_TS folder.
    BURN......

Stick in your home DVD player, enjoy.
