  1. SONY DRU500A supplied with firmware 1.0c

I used many DATASAFE General Purpose '2x' DVD-R for movies and they played fine in my stand alone Mustek.
I bought some DATASAFE General Purpose DVD-RW (Branded Yellow/Black) and they wern't recognised in the Sony.
    Upgraded firmware to 1.0f
DVD-RW Disks recognised and burnt with NERO 5.5.10..
Most of these would NOT read in my SONY.
DVD-R started to have read errors/not play in SONY but would still play in my stand alone MUSTEK.
I tried re installing 1.0f .. still the same.
    Fortunately I had a 1.0d file
    Downgraded firmware to 1.0d
Now my Datasafe DVD-R & DVD-RW read FINE in my SONY.
DVD-RW successfully written & Read in Sony.

I got the 1.0f from the Sony site.
    Anyone else had this trouble???

  2. I have the exactly the same problem with Princo DVD-RW's. 1.0d worked very well with Princo RW's, upgraded to 1.0f, now they record, but won't play in the sony burner.

I don't want to go back to 1.0d, because I have other brand disks that did not burn with 1.0d, but now works Ok with 1.0f.
I also have many Ritek disks that burn a 2x with 1.0f, but with 1.0d the only burn at 1x.

If you want to try 1.0e firmware I have it (but not tested it). 1.0e might read Princo and Datasafe disks Ok, and support more different brands of disk (like 1.0f) but I have not used it to be sure.

  3. I've had the same problem with "green Bulkpaq Gen. 4 2x" DVD-R media. They are made by Princo but have a TDK G2 ID. Using 1.0f it (using NERO, DVD Decrypter) would recognize the discs as being 2x capable, but when it was trying to write the lead-in would fail with a power calibrarion error.

Going back to 1.0d fixed the problem and they work fine when burned at 2x ('')

If you do a binary compare on the installer files for 1.0e and 1.0f you'll only see a few differences (it so happens these files are the same size so a simple FC /B in a DOS prompt will suffice).

Maybe forum readers who know their way around firmwares can try and find out if there's a whitelist/blacklist and if so, what's on them?

  5. You can downgrade to 1.0d firmware, or you can try 1.0e.
I have 1.0e firmware, but I have not tested it. Not sure if it will fix the Princo problem.
Just e-mail me if you want to try 1.0e
