I bought one the other day from Dixons (UK) and found it didn't play home-made DVD/VCD very well. Lots of glitches, freeze frames, pops and crackles. Also it has a plastic case and felt rather cheap and lightweight to me. Not like some other Pioneer models I have (444/545 etc.)
Therefore I would strongly advise you to check this DV-U7 model out in the store with your own disks before buying it. You might find it okay. But I didn't. Make sure the test is thorough.
By way of comparison, when I took the DV-U7 back for an exchange, I also tried my own disks (DVD/VCD) in the Panasonic DVD-NV32 and each played fine. So I bought that one instead and am currently quite happy with it. Also - it was about £20 cheaper.
**UK readers should note, however, that the Panny NV32 is a Region 2 only machine with MACROVISION enabled. So it won't play NTSC disks and cannot be connected satisfactorily thru a video recorder.**
