I'm creating backups of 13.4 GB (14,491,451,392 bytes) of data contained in 194 files and 38 folders. I'm using RecordNow and a Sony DRU-500a DVD+/-RW to put this data on four Accu DVD-R discs. RecordNow gives my a successful creation message after writing to each of the four discs. I'm also doing an independent verification by copying the files on each of the four discs to my C: drive and comparing it back to the originals, which are on my D: drive. At first I copied from the DVD-Rs from my NEC DVD-ROM drive. It seemingly copies (slowly) all the file o.k. until it gets to one file (only 1 or MB large), which it hangs on for a minute or two until I get the windows error message, "Cannot Copy filex. The system cannot read from the specified device." I also encountered the same type of problem when I try to copy all the files on disc 2. It's also the same two files (one of disc 1 and one on disc 2) that give me the problem. However, if I do my copy reading from the Sony DRU-500a drive I don't encounter these errors and the copy seems to go faster. Is it the Accu DVD-R Media, RecordNow or NEC DVD-ROM Drive?

EDITED / UPDATE: TOO WEIRD! I actually made two sets of four data discs. I get the copy error on the same two files (one on disc 1 and one on disc 2) in both sets. That is, "filex" on both discs 1 produces the error and "filey" on both discs 2 produces the error. BTW: I haven't tried copying from discs 3 or 4 from my NEC DVD-ROM drive. Again, all four discs copy just fine to my C: drive when I put them in my Sony DRU-500a drive.

  2. Before doing a data backup run Windows Scandisk to make sure there are no hard disk errors. There may be an intermittant problem on the disk on that file.

I have used Nero to back up to Accu DVD-R on a DRU-500A (1.0f) and it seemed ok. I put the disk in my Lite-On DVD-ROM drive and it took awhile for it to recognize the disk then it was ok (UDF/ISO 1.02).

I am not 100% convinced the Accu's are the best - my Philips 711 DVD player doesn't like them so far but the Apex 1500 does.

  3. Is there any better way how to check if DATA backup is OK ? To copy file on HD seems little slow solution and it requieres FREE space on HD (which I don't have now). I was thinking about "rael" (no DVD) data backup on DVD-R but since I was reading all this "bad media" (skipping, freezeing) problems I am kind of worry what would happen if I store my data on DVD-R and delet them from PC and later when I will need them I couldn't read them

I did the scan, which took several hours, and it found no errors. If it were bad media then I shouldn't get same error on the same two files, should I? Also, the files copy o.k. when I copy from the Sony DRU-500a drive. I'd apperciate anyother thoughts on this.
