  2. VCD = a video disc format (that can include menus, etc.) that uses video encoded at particular MPEG-1 parameters and is on CD media.

DVD = another video disc format that uses (generally) MPEG-2 compression for video (at particular encoding parameters) and is on DVD media (different from CD).

DivX is a type of AVI codec (compression, decompression). It is based around MPEG-4. It is not a disc format.

  4. No - the DivX file is most likely to just be the main body of the film, and it will have no 'interactive features'. The menus etc.. on DVD's (and on VCD's) are part of the disc format/authoring.

As vitualis said, DivX is not a disc format like VCD or DVD, but rather a type of compression/encoding for avi video.

  5. Hi thanks for all your reply's, just wondering, is there a way that u can burn a vcd to have like the menus at the begging? Is it possible to burn a dvd onto vcd? will that take many cdr's? Also if i download a video off the net, is it possible to place chapters in a vcd, or does it have to be a svcd? thanks for all your help!

  6. If you want to menus, etc., and easy playback on a stand-alone DVD player, you will need to make either a VCD, SVCD or DVD.

If you source file is a DivX AVI file, then you will need to convert it to an MPEG file of the relevant settings: http://www.vcdhelp.com/convert

After you have made your MPEG video file suitable for inclusion on a VCD/SVCD or DVD, you will need to "author" the disc.

For VCD and SVCD, I strongly recommend the VCDImager system. This is used by a number of free GUIs such as the excellent VCDEasy. VCDEasy also allows for a relatively easy way of making menus and chapters. Highly recommended.

A number of other programs (commercial) can make VCDs as well with varying levels of competency (e.g., Nero, Easy CD Creator, WinOnCD).

For DVD, you will need to get a DVD authoring program.
