Has anyone else run into this error message, and know what's up?
My Tmpgenc was working fine, then after not using it for a couple of weeks, I'm now getting this error "Illegal MPEG system stream".
After completing an encode of mpeg2 (svcd type, 22mins), tmpgenc displays the above error message. Tested with two different files. The resulting mpeg file has video that freezes momentarily at a few specific points in the file.
Also, VCDeasy tools, analyze mpg file describes the file as:
MPEG2, PlayingTime=272.038s, Bitrate=2674800bps, PtsOffset=0726s, 39812 packets
Video Stream: Motion Video, 480x480, 29.97003fps (NTSC), 2520kbps
Audio Stream: Audio Standard MPEG layer2 Stereo, 44100Hz, 163840bps
--Warnings:
mpeg scan: pack header code (0x000001ba) expected, but 0xb6db6db6 found (buflen = 2324)
bad packet at packet #39812 (stream byte offset 92523088) -- remaining 341974276 bytes of stream will be ignored

Hi,
Same strange problem as you. I did a vcd sunday (16th), everything was fine (with vcdeasy + nero). Now, all my mpeg1 are not passing the tests of vcdeasy, even the one that was ok sunday. I think it may be related to my latest security update of XP late sunday evening. I take the same mpeg1, do the vcd with nero (without chapter), everything is fine, it play fine, etc.
As for tmpgenc, I found out that the use of extended instruction (sse2 and the like) are probably the source of the problem. In another test, I was able to compress an avi ok after unchecking them.
I tried to rollback XP to my config of Saturday, vcdeasy still doesn't take the mpeg1 that Nero is able to handle
I will try other thing this evening, I hope not to have to re-install everything

Hi,
Tonight, after having error with tmpgenc, running out of option to find out what was going on, I uninstalled 'seti@home'. I restarted the same compression and voilą, no error. Strange no? I had installed it last weekend after receing an email from them.
Maybe they are not related, but, I hate it when, after 1h, I get error and loose all that time... Especialy when everhting was going well before.

I think I finally found the fix. I changed two options in the environmental section, and I was immediately able to encode a large avi file (to mpeg2) that I previously could not.
The two options are
1) unchecked 'Do not use cache function by operating system to access file'
2) Changed the location of the temporary file to a partition with more free space. (I realized that my c drive only had 280mg free, and although tmpgenc was not complaining about space, I thought this might be a problem)
I have not tested each option individually, but my guess is that the temporary file location was the problem. This would also explain how danylab's uninstall of seti@home solved his problem -it freed disk space allowing the temp file more room. This would also explain how, during my testing, that I was able to encode a small mpeg file, but not a large one.
Hope this helps others who may experience the same problem.
