  1. i used Vegas Video to make a four minute music video for a band. the final file size is 1Gb. a little too large for the old interweb. i am using Virtual Dub to convert the AVI file to a Divx file. i have been messing with the data rate, but the lower i go, the crappier it looks. i know there has to be a way for me to get a smaller sized file and still have good quality, since i have seen a number of porno videos that look good and dont take up that much space. my input file is 720 x 480. any help would be greatly appreciated as usual.

    Well...

    * what final size ARE you looking for, for your web ??
    * what resolution do you want to use ??
    * WHAT version of divX ARE you choosing ??
    * what is your source, ie dvd/sataite/vhs/vcam etc.
    * what settings ARE you using in the divX encode ??
    * target for viewing ie, TV-OUT or PC monitor viewing, etc. ??
    * don't forget to add a little compromise between the above and so.
    * Missed anything.. just add to the above list

Example, a 4 minute divX video could be anywhere's from as little
as 1mb to 50mb or higher, depending on above and then some, and
don't forget the "compromise" factor. ...how much you are willing to
    compromise on quality.

I'm not expert in divX (still a newbie) but I've come a long way
w/it. And, in fact, am currently engaged in an ongoing project w/it.

I have some vsamples still at my thread on this res. below for some
idea of quality... not the best, but at least IS a start...

  3. I can help with this as I've been doing divx encoding for a long time, but we need more details as what you're aiming for. There's no way around that.

  4. the video will be for computer viewing only. i am using divx 3.11. i have gotten the bit rate down to 300K and the audio as MP3 192K. the final size, i not sure. i want people to be able to see what the video looks like and not have them squint at a box the size of a piece of rice to watch it. the sorce is 720 x 480, with 90% of the footage from a Sony DHi8 camera. the final output from the vegas video is perfect, but the band wants to put this on their web site and they dont have a gig of space. i understand there is going to be a loss in quality, but i dont think that everyone can DL a 15meg file, or would even want to DL a 15meg file even if they are real fans of a band. i hope that answered all the above questions, and thank you very much for your help.

  5. Almost had forgotten about ya

Most people do listen to mp3's around 128kb and like it, so I'd trade the extra 64kb of bitrate for video bitrate instead. Around 300kb, you'll have to make it low res, or it will be real blocky... As for 15 megs, everyday, there are thousands of users downloading files around 45 to 60 megs each of similar material... But then, they need a host with some good bandwidth...
