Need help on fitting a 90-min movie to a 4.7 GB DVD-R.
Here's what happens, I converted my Divx movie using virtual dub, then went to TMPGenc to convert it to DVD. Then I used the wizard, selected DVD (NTSC) then used the vcdhelp's bitrate calculator, to ensure it fits on one DVD-R. I still couldn't get it to fit, the bitrate can only go down to a certain level, and it won't allow me to go any lower. I'm stuck and need help on this. Thanks in advance.

well since you are going to encode the video anyways. why don't you rent the dvd of the movie, since its only 90 minutes you will prob won't have to encode it. all you have to do is copy..
-
That would probably work Ghoster, but I have a lot of old movies that video stores no longer carry that I'd like transferred to DVD. Plus, I'd like to learn how other folks in the forum approach fitting a 90-min video on a 4.7GB DVD.
There's a lot of articles that talks about the ability to fit a full 90-min movie on a 4.7 GB disc. Even TMPGenc on its wizard talks about 120 mins of video fitting in a 4.7 GB DVD-R. My question is how is it done? -
you can put over 3 hours of dvd quality on one dvd. you need a capturing device to transfer your vhs to dvd but you prob won't get much better than vcd quality and plus you will prob loose frames. as for vcd quality you can put like 6 to 7 hours on one dvd......

What are you using to author your DVD's. Some authoring programs only let you use PCM audio so the audio takes up 10mb/s so for a 90 min video this is 900mb just for the audio, which obviously limits the length and/or bitrate of the video. Use an authoring application that can use mpeg audio.
After you had encoded your 90 min mpeg with TMPGEnc what was the size of the file and what bitrate did you use. -
Craig, I used virtual dub to join two Divx files together, CD1 and CD2. After joining the files, I extracted the audio to a .wav file, then went to TMPGenc to convert the file to MPEG-2 DVD (file size after selecting, 50 percent of DVD capacity was about 2 GB). Then after that, I used Sonic's MyDVD to author it to a DVD, then I get the oversized file, which I don't have a clue what it was since it won't allow me to burn to a DVD-R (4.7 GB). What would your suggestion be?
-
Sonic MYDVD will not accept mpeg audio streams so it has to convert the audio from mpeg to pcm to author and burn the DVD, this in effect considerably increases the size of your video project and this is why it won't fit on 1 DVD. What you need is to obtain some software that will accept mpeg audio. I believe ifoedit is free software that will accept mpeg audio, I personally use Ulead DVD workshop, but it is quite pricey. A cheaper version is Ulead DVD movie factory, which has less features, but I believe still supports mpeg audio.

Thanks Craig. I do have IFOedit, so I take it that after converting the file from TMPGenc, I need to demultiplex it, so IFO edit can author the file?
-
Possibly, I have never used ifoedit so I don't know for sure. One good thing about DVD workshop is that it will accept an mpeg file without the need for demuliplexing first.

how can I fit a 3 hr movie on one dvdr?
I have an encoded mpg file that is under 4 gigs but when I try to load it into maestro, power director or nero, I get a length limitation error.
thanks -
Quality is going to suffer if you try to fit a 3-hour movie to a DVD-R. I had to do mine through TMPGenc. You'll have to create your own template, by using one of the template formats in TMGPenc, then, don't forget to unlock the template to allow you to make changes. Once you've accomplished this, you can select how many percent you'd like to fit on your DVD-R.
I think there's a guide out here to do that.
