As a paid user, I am considering upgrading from the version that I originally purchased(version 2.56) to the current 2.59.
BUT, in case I haven't found the right Mpeg-2 decoder that the new versions now require, I DON'T want to lose the use of my 2.56 that doesn't require one.
Can I get 2.59 Plus, without it overwriting and losing my 2.56 Plus that works well for me still?

yes you can ... but if you want to make sure .. just zip your full tmpgenc exsisting dir as a back up ..
-
also i found -- installing the demo version of powerdvd is all that is required for the tmpgenc required mpeg2 decoder ..

Thanks BJ_M,
Just how do I zip a directory? Please?(won't the registry also be affected too? what do I do about that?)
I've just learned that 2.59 has some bugs in it.
Is there a way to get 2.58 until they fix them? -
i have no problems with 2.59 ... what bugs ? (they may be some - i just have not had any) ..
no - dont worry about the registry .
if using XP -- just right click on a dir and zip it .. though personally i HATE XP friendly handling of zip files ... -
I'm with you there. I strongly advise using WinZip.
As for your concern about the registry and so forth, the "System Restore" function in WinXP is a wonderful thing.

unfortunately, I'm only using Win98SE, but are you guys saying to zip the folder in my C drive that holds the TMPGenc program?
Is that what you mean?
(the bug has been discussed on TMPGenc's message board and has to do with TMPGencs inability to encode at nonstandard bitrates even though they show an option to do it(you still end up with standard britrate video after hours of 2-pass encoding) -

one of the latest times it was mentioned was in a "Bug Report" pasted below from the TMPG Enc message board on the 19th:

2pass-VBR always get the same file size even
if I change the avarage bitrate to 900.
I have select VCD(non-standard) to override CBR-1150,
but tmpgenc still created same files-size no matter
what avarage bitrate setting is.
Using MPEG-1 System(VBR) probably will work so I can
get a 85 minute movie down to 800MB.
But why does not Video-CD(non-standard) work anymore???????

It's a well known Bug in TMPGEnc 2.59. Use an older Version for Multiplexing, and you will be happy again

And a kind fellow user on that board helped me get a copy of 2.58
Thanks Guys -
yes i saw that -- since i dont do "vcd" it wasnt a issue ... i trust tmpgenc will fix it soon ..
