  1. Hello,

I have an APEX-500A DVD player on which you can play both NTSC/PAL DVD's. I would like to play PAL formatted VCD's but when I try to play the CD, the color goes to black and white and my tv screen rolls. As soon as I take the CD out, the tv is fine. I am suspecting that my tv is not PAL compliant so I would like to know what is the best/cheapest PAL to NTSC converter for a DVD player to a TV. My television is about 3 years old and I currently cannot remember the make/model.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

  2. I had the same problem as it would be the TV that cannot play NTSC, I phoned a few places and apparently you cannot convert the TV from PAL to NTSC.

  3. Okay but is there any device that you can place between the DVD and the TV in order to convert the PAL signal to NTSC?

  4. I spoke to several specialist TV guys and they say nothing exists, the only thing youn can do is to reencode the movie from NTSC to PAL which I believe is explained in the guides on the left

  5. I have tried the forums in converting from PAL to NTSC and I figured that there might be an easier hardware solution.
I will keep with PAL->NTSC software conversion then.

    Thank you

  6. Yep, I searched for exactly the same thing but no joy, least I know to get a TV which copes with NTSC/PAL when mine eventually pops.

  7. That will be my plan also.
I better start checking the seat cushions for change.

  8. Most Apex have a PAL to NTSC converter built-in so to speak. You only need to set your TV type to NTSC (and not multi-system and not automatic). You can read more about this on this website:

  9. Yep... You should buy DVD player that does conversion from PAL to NTSC.

My Koss DVP-2161, Daewoo DVD-5800 and Mintek 2580 does that for me (all tested with PAL All region DVD, Koss and Daewoo also with PAL 2 region on NTSC TV).

There are players that can play PAL on PAL TV and NTSC on NTSC TV, but this does not mean that they can convert. And don't believe everythink that you can see on the web. BestBuy.com was selling one DVD player that I was interesting in and their specification on the web was wrong and it remained that way even that I sent email to them.

  10. To yg1968

I will try that tonight and see what happens.
I currently have it set to "AUTO".

    I will post a message tonight/tomorrow.

    Thanks again!

  11. I changed my tv type from AUTO to NTSC and
    everything worked fine.

This will lessen my encoding headaches.

    Thank you for the help.
