  1. Does it matter if a dvd is burnt with a file that is mpeg1 or mpeg2? will it cause it to work on some dvd players and not others?

DVD format accepts MPEG-2, I've heard of DVD-VCD formats, but almost nothing accepts them. I'd stick with the standard MPEG-2.

I've been doing some mpeg 1 dvds. This is good if you already have video encoded this way.
You must re-sample the audio sampling frequency to 48 khz if it isn't already.

If you are encoding from scratch, I'd agree that mpeg 2 is better.

  5. PS2's are among the players that support DVD's authored in MPG1. I have two other Sony set top players that also support this along with my Apex. Anyone know what percentage will not play them? I've thought of re-authoring my DVD's as MPG2, but wondered if it was in fact worth the time, looking at the success rate I've experienced and all.

MPEG-1 is a part of the DVD specification, so any player carrying the DVD logo should support it.
