A month ago I used smartripper to rip two DVD's to my hard disk. I got the 6 vob files, the info, and the audio file. These movies still play very good on just about any software on my system. The problem is that the movies are well over 6 GB.

I've looked at every guide on this forum, on Doom9, and MPEGX, and can find nothing that will let me split the VOB files so they can fit on 2 DVD+R disk. I've looked at all kinds of editors, splitters, etc. but nothing will open the VOB files.

Is there any way (other than coverting this all back to avi) to get these movies onto a DVD or a SVCD?

I can load the VOB's into Nero but of course it says I'm missing the BUP file, and the file size is too large for one disk. Can I just load Nero with the first 3 VOB IDs and burn that, and then burn the last 3 on a second DVD+R.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I thought getting my first SVCD movie capture, compressed, encoded, edited, and burnt was difficult, but it is nothing as bad as trying to use the various guides to made a DVD.

Last question,... Now that I have the right hardware, and just about every piece of software available, what is the most direct way to copy a DVD movie. I'm sure I have to rip the DVD to get rid of the encryption, then I could use INfoedit to get rid of stuff not wanted, like extra languages, etc. After that the problem will still be splitting into 2 or more DVD's.

After reading all the DVD guides and going through all the software that each guide uses, I am just about brain dead. Not one of them end up using the same tools that I have.

  2. Can't help with your first question.

The direct way to rip a dvd is to use DvD Decryptor to either rip vobs or to rip has an iso if small enough to put back onto DvD-r.

    or

Smartripper to demux movie and audio, so that you can re-encode the movie to fit onto a DvD-r.

both of these methods will remove encryption and make region free

  3. Try This Put the first 3 Vob files in one dir. and the rest in another, then run IfoEdit v0.95, Click on "Create IFOs" then select the first vob file in the first dir. This will create The Bup and Ifo file you need for the first three Vob's then do the same for the second half. burn first dir on one Dvd-r then Burn the second dir on another. (I renamed the vob files in my second dir to 1,2&3 insted of its original 4,5 &6) Worked for me.
    give it a try.

Have you tried ripping the DVD with smart Ripper.
    Using DVD2Avi.
Then Use TENGEN, at one point in TENGEN you can split the file or you can adjust the bit rate so it will fit on 1 DVD.
Then use SpruceUp to author and Nero to burn.
    My movies turn out OK.

Thanks to "CRAM", I was able to use IFOedit to fix up my vob's and split them into two directories and from there used IFOedit to update the IFO and BUP files for each disk. This split the movie into two DVD's and I was able to burn them with nero. I used a DVD+RW disk so that I could reuse the disk for another test.

The DVD+RW would play in my PC and in my APEX 1500 player, but it would not play in my Sylvania DVD player. I believe the media is fine, it could be that the strange way I had to burn this DVD left somthing out that most standard DVD players needed.

I guess I'll have to try ripping a DVD using the right process and then testing my other DVD player. In looking at the specs,.. it says it "Won't" read any other kind of CD, ROM, VCD, or anything but a DVD. It does play every other DVD that I have rented, even the the ones with a lot of scratches. I bought a second unit because I want to create VCD's and SVCD's and I knew it would never read them.

Anyway, thanks again to CRAM for getting me going on this.

Thnaks to all those that responded with help. I've now made 3 DVD's using DVD+R media and got all of them to play on my old DVD player. The answer is in the DVD Bitsetter program. It allowed me to modify the setup in my AOPEN DVD burner such that all DVD+R show that they are DVD-ROM disks after burning. This change alone allowed my old player to see the disk as a standard DVD movie,... no problems. When it saw it as a DVD+R it would not even load it.

DVD Bit setter program can be found at www.DVDplusRW.org

One last thank you will I will post in a separate note,... I used "CRAM's" suggestion to fix one DVD movie that had been ripped using "Smartripper", and then divided the VOB's (3 and 3) into two different directories, and burned from there.

On a second set of VOB's file, that could fit on one disk, they were missing some files so I used IFOedit to re-create the missing files and then burned the video using Nero. All movies work fine.

Thanks a million to all those who have helped, especially to those that created the "Guides" and HOw to files. It really makes a difference.

Good to know that this bitsetting trick works!

I have to check it on my Ricoh 5120 and standalone dvd player.

I'm using IFOedit to re-create the missing files when I first stripped things in smartripper. I've tried to use it to strip out extra language and chapters, but first attempt got screwed up. I beleive the operator has a short in his headset!!!!.

The movies that I separated by just moving VOB's were 6+ GB and they were going to end up as 2 DVD disk anyway. It was just too easy to separate them by hand until I really learn how to use IFOedit. The english translation of the IFOedit guide is not all that clear,... especially when you don't follow the guide from beginning to end. For example, all the movies that I'm trying to correct and burn were ripped with smartripper and therefore when the guide talks about view text fields produced with Decryptor, I can do what the guide says. As far as splitting into two dvd's, I'll use it when I need the space.
