When I playback vcd's (actually xvcd's) created by TMPGENC 2.56 on my Omni DV3200P stand alone player (equiv to Malata 520 I think) I occasionally get little white squares pop up on screen. Sometimes the white squares go from small to large in a row of say 5 or 6 squares. These squares normally appear in the balck bar area not in the main movie part of the screen. Sometimes i get large coloured squares (not noise or common blocks due to low bitrate). The reason i know this isn't noise or low bitrate issues is a: this does not happen when playing back on the PC and b: if i rewind the vcd after i've noticed the problem when playing back on the omni and then resume play the problem does not occur again at the same point. it is random. Once it has completely locked up the player (on the 3rd time of playing back a particular vcd, the other two times it played back all the way thru but with those annoying squares.)
I've also noticed that the frequency in which this occurs may be related to how long the player has been on for. ie. it may be heat related.
oh and I user Nero 5.5.latest to create the vcd's. I've used TDK 80min cd-rw, TDK 80min cd-r audio, MagMedia 80min cd-r, Dr Data 80min cd-r, Teac Media Cache 90min cd-r.
I should probably mention that DVD playback is fine, I do not see these problems no matter how long the player is on for. I have not tried SVCD yet.
any comments, ideas, suggestions, questions are most welcome.

4x max burning...
make sure the burner's buffer is never low...even if you have burnproof, etc... it may cause problems...try burning on your comp w/o doing anything else on it...
you mentioned you've tried "I've used TDK 80min cd-rw, TDK 80min cd-r audio, MagMedia 80min cd-r, Dr Data 80min cd-r, Teac Media Cache 90min cd-r." did the same thing happen on all the different brands???
sometimes this occurs w/ my SVCDs, but after i play them again, they're gone...could be random or the particular disc you burned is just bad (also happens to me) -
thanks for the reply poopy
hmm i think i usually go with 6x or 8x on the cd-r's, the cd-rw's are done at 4x as it is the max write speed for them. Will try 4x on a decent cd-r.
The burner I have is a Liteon LTR-40125S (40x12x48x).
Yep the problem was there on all those brands of disk (i'm not too surprised it happend with the Dr Data and MagMedia disks, very cheap).
I have just tried SVCD I know to work well on another player (Voxson 330 i think) and it seemed mostly ok on my player, very minor glitches but not too frequent. The svcd was on two of those 90min Teach Media Cache disks. So at this stage the problem seems worse with xvcd's.
do you have a malata 520/omni dv3200p? just wondering what cd-r's you find work best.
thanks again -

Well I've tried many things now - different media, cbr, vbr, vcd, svcd, xvcd, tmpgenc, nero, vcdeasy, videostudio, slow burns, fast burns, medium speed burns. The only thing that has remained the same is my PC hardware. I've tested the vcd's I was seeing this problem with on both my sister's Voxson 330 and my work mates Omni DV-3200P (same model as mine) and did not see any problems. I'm fairly sure now that there is a small fault with my player that seems to become worse as the unit reaches normal? operating temperature (ie. when it's warmed up). The unit is well ventilated (nothing on top of it or to the sides, and it isn't on top of any electrical equipment). I'm not sure how easy it'll be to explain this problem to the store I purchased it from beginning of last week but i might have to try. If the problems still occurred on my friends DV-3200P I may have learned to live with it but since it seems to be a fault with my particular player rather than design it's really bugging me.
thanks for the help anyways -
returned the player and exchanged it for another of the same make and model. this one works great! no problems with any of the discs i previously had problems with. one happy chappy now
