  1. The player is a Hitachi DV-S522U. Menus on commercial DVD's work fine and dandy, but when I try a DVD made with SpruceUp or Ulead DVD Workshop, then the player is apparently unable to distinguish between the selected and unselected states of the menu items.

Is there any way to make a simple numbered menu, like the ones that Nero makes for vcd's? Or does anyone know of some other way that I can make menus that any player can read?

Any info/suggestions will be most appreciated.

I get the same problem with one of my standalones - an LG3200E. Spruce is OK though, I just get problems with the Ulead proudects, Movie Factory and Workshop.

I read in another forum post on this site that version 1.3 fixes the problem for Workshop but I only just upgraded to 1.3 and haven't tested it yet.

Follow the yellow brick road below!

If you are looking for a GUIDE on Spruce-UP, try this:

Follow the example on using ChapterXtractor and DVD Maestro to retain your chapters instead of using Spruce-UP.

This is a list of the software that is used in this tutorial:

    DVD Decrypter v3.1.2.0
    DVD2AVI v1.76
    TMPGEnc Plus v2.56.39.143
    ChapterXtractor v0.961
    Spruce DVDMaestro v2.9.2915a
    Gear Pro DVD 6.02 rc07

Here are a couple more examples of using DVD Maestro
