  1. Here's my "scientific" experiment.....

    I. Source material: ESPNEWS channel. Source consisted of text (mostly white) on a black background. There was no motion at all (stats).

II. Capture: Roughly 10 second uncompressed AVI files at the following resolutions in YUY2 colorspace (I didn't use RGB24 because my setup will not cap 720x480 in RGB24):

    A] 720x480
    B] 480x480
    C] 352x480

III. Conversion: I used TMPG (ver. 2.56.39.143) to convert each one of the source AVI files to VCD (with the wizard). I used all the default values supplied by TMPG with the exception of "full screen (keep aspect ratio)" for each source.

IV. Comparision: I then used Virtualdub to open each one of the resulting Mpeg-1 files and copied a frame into MSPaint. I then checked each one for any appreciable differences.

    V. Findings: I honestly don't see any appreciable difference between the resulting bitmaps. I wouldn't know which is which if I hadn't named them 720x480, 480x480, and 352x480. I'm NOT saying there is absolutely no difference. I'm just saying that I cannot see any. For folks like me with slow processors, I don't think the extra time converting 720x480 caps to VCD is worth it for the standard AVI to VCD conversion.

  3. It all depends on the source. The better the source, the more you can tell the difference. Also comparing frames is not a good way to tell which one is really better. It depends on what your prefernces and constraints are.
