  1. Whenever I've converted from a divx file (with ac3 audio), the end result is always the same : a video file that plays fine for a while, but at random intervals, the video either freezes or speeds up, completely out of synch with the audio (which seems to be running 100% fine w/o glitches) - eventually it synchs back up, but it takes anywhere from 1-5 minutes, and then usually goes right back out again in another 5-10 minutes. Anyone have any ideas?

the usual process (in case it helps) is this:
    1) extract ac3 audio with virtuaDub
    2) convert ac3 to mp2 with BeSweet
    3) encode avi to vcd w/Tmpgenc
    3) multiplex mp2 audio w/tmpgenc

I've also tried converting the ac3 using headach3, and have tried encoding directly in tmpgenc without multiplex (selecting the divx avi as video stream and a wav created via headach3 for audio) witht he same problem. Thought it might have been my dvd player, but no - tested on 2 other players with the same random loss of synch.

Anyone have ANY ideas at all? I seem to be able to encode fine from divx with no ac3, so I assume it lies somewhere in there...

When they get this out of wack, you need a video renderer.

I'll load the audio and video track in Vegas Video, you can seperate the streams, and maneuver them to preview and line them up, then simply render out the audio track, from the beginning and end points of the video track line (including balnk or empty spaces) then render this wav file in Headac3he to Mp2, Multiplex, all is happy...

  3. So you believe the problem lies with the extraction of the ac3? Or the conversion from ac3 to mp2?

What also strikes me as strange is that it's the video that goes out of sync, not the audio. It stutters like mad, slowing down, speeding up, etc - but the sound seems to play at s consistant speed...
