  1. I've tried 9 different types of media and only the generic silver/silver has worked so far and I've had them for years and ran out =(.

I'm creating a VCD with Ulead DVD Picture Show v1.0. The first VCD I created with some old generic CD-R's that I bought years ago worked like a charm on my Sony DVP-S300, unfortunately I only had 2 left and need to make more.

So far I've tried the following media with no luck:

Memorex 700MB/80min 48x CD-R with white cover = NO DISC reading from player.

Digital Research 700MB/80min 16x CD-R with silver/black cover = NO DISC reading from player.

Pioneer 650MB 12x CD-R with blue surface, gold label = NO DISC reading from player

Maxell 650MB/74min CD-R with blue surface, gold label = NO DISC reading from player

Maxell 700MB 40x CD-R with silver surface, silver label = NO DISC reading from player

Taiyo Yuden TY80-BK silver/silver no label = NO DISC reading from player

Plextor generic silver surface, gold cover = NO DISC reading from player

Generic 74min Gold/Gold CD-R = NO DISC reading from player

If anyone could possibly help me here I would greatly appreciate it. I guess the best chance I have now is to find out what kind of media the original generic CD-R's I used actually are. Does anyone know if there is any way to extract any information from the serial number on the media? Perhaps that might tell me what kind of media it is.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  2. I have a Sony DVD player and for some reason vcd's only seem to work with cd-rw of which I have had no problems with (any brand). I have read other forums where people have gotten certain cd-r brands to work (Princo is one that comes to mind) but I cant remember all of them.
I'd rather use cd-rw anyway as I have enough coasters at home already.

  8. That is what Sony do to the customers : low compatibility.

The best deal is make SVCD in CDR. Cost about $0.30 ( 2 x $0.15 ) per movie to get near DVD quality in players like Pioneer, JVC, philips .....

Sony's customer get a only VHS qaulity movie on CDRW ( cost about $0.45 ). Sony can't play SVCD.

A lot of Panasonicplayers don't even read any CDR or CDRW or SVCD.

  12. Try going to nero's website and looking for a tool called nero infotool...

it will scan a blank disc and on one of the tabs will tell you the actual manufacturer of the disk... not maxell, tdk, or whatever but the company that they bought the disk from and put their label on..
that is probably what your looking for...

    hope it helps

I have the Sony DVP-S360 and I've been able to burn the cheep CompUSA (the ones with now labels). That's the only CD-R I've been able to get to work in this player.

Recently, I've got a hold of a DVD-R (Memorex) and to my surprise, it played! It didn't work on the Apex boxes that I Tried, but did on the Sony. Looks like the newer Sony boxes will play anything, saving my money to get one that will play everything and MP3 DVDs.
