not sure if I understand the question - or if it is one question or two?
A lot of sound editors can open avi files & extract the audio - I know SoundForge can, I think GoldWave can, and I suspect CoolEdit can.
I'm not so sure about different codecs though - xvid and ac3 etc...

You can use TMPGEnc
File, output to file, wave file.
By the way, whats wrong with virtualdub -
sync problem with virtualdub...
so tmpgenc can rip to wav from Avi file and also from mpeg2 file? -
When you say sync problem do you mean when you encode. Are you trying to save a VBR audio stream as an uncompressed PCM wav file. If so make sure you set the audio to full processing mode and not direct stream copy.
