Hello,
A friend has a Philips DVD-723, my parents have a Philips DVD-701 (both not patched / upgraded)
I do have 100s of movies on XVCD and XSVCD. They play on my own DVD player (Apex600 / Hiteker 600, hacked upto the limits) without a problem, but they always give problems on Philips machines.
I know not all DVD-players support XVCD and/or XSVCD but this shouldn't be a problem with those Philips machines.
On both Philips machines movies give the same problem; HICK-UPs.
Yesterday I tried a XSVCD on the 723 with this specifications;
MPEG2 - CBR
480x576 / 25 fps
VideoBitrate 2650
Audio: 44.1 kHz / 224 kbps STEREO
Used CDR's are perfect ones (Taiyo Yuden)
Used software:
CinemaCraft Encoder to encode
TMPGenc MPEGTools to merge & cut
VCDEasy to master BIN/CUE xSVCD files
CDRWin to burn the image files
So then the playing begins.....
Disc in DVDplayerhit the play button
There it starts playing...but....within seconds the first hick-up...goes on playing some seconds...hickup.....goes on playing some seconds....hickup...etc etc....
(With Hickup I mean, the movie freezes about a second and goes on after that.)
Does anyone know how to solve this ?
Is it the audio rate ?
The video rate doesn't seem to be too high ?
Might a firmware upgrade be the solution (for sure?) ?
Don't need the region free / Macrovision / RCE hacks... just being able to play XVCD and XSVCD. So another workaround without touching the firmware would even be better

did you check the dvd player compatibility section of this website? it'll tell you what your dvd player can handle

The bitrate is too high for philips players. I have am 710 myself and it plays (X)(S)VCD very well as long as the videobitrate stays under 2525. If I go above..... hickups (it plays a few seconds.... freezes.... then plays a few seconds etc.) A friend of mine has a philips 955 and that machine wouldn't even play an xvcd with cbr of 1600. Try a disc with a bitrate no higher than 2520 and it might work.

Another tip: If your making an (X)SVCD to play on a Philips-player encode the audio at 48.000 Hz. Philips players like that a lot better than 44.100 Hz. (for (X)VCD stick with 44.100 Hz though)

Hello,
Thanx all for the help and tips. I found the problem and solution;
PHILIPS DVD players only play discs with a TOTAL bitrate of MAXIMAL 2650. With TOTAL I mean Video plus Audio. So 2400 Video plus 224 Audio does work. 2500 + 192 does NOT work and gives hickups. (so real SVCD standards)
It seems most/all PHILIPS have this "problem" and some/all SONY might have this problem too.There R 3 sides on every story;

I have the Philips 724AT and don't have this problem at all. Each and every one of my SVCD's play flawlessly with higher or lower bit rates. My DVD's, DVD'r's, etc...also play flawlessly.
